Baseball Earns A Pair Of Wins To Open Series At Bucknell

The Lead: Sophomore Cam O'Neill (Lynn, Mass.) drove in three runs in the top of the 10th inning to lead Holy Cross past Bucknell to open its weekend series in Lewisburg, Pa.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Junior Brendan King (Brookline, Mass.) started on the mound for Holy Cross, pitching 7.2 scoreless innings while allowing just five hits in that time and dealing six strikeouts.
  • Junior George Capen (Gainesville, Va.) pitched the remaining 2.1 innings in relief, allowing just one hit and dealing four strikeouts.
  • Holy Cross added the only runs of the game in the top of the 10th inning. The Crusaders proceeded to load the bases as Junior Josh Hassell (Tulsa, Okla.) was walked, senior Shane Sandoval (Westerly, R.I.) reached on a fielder's choice and senior Nick Lovullo (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) was walked. With the bases loaded, O'Neill ripped a double to left field to clear the bases and give Holy Cross the 3-0 lead.
  • In the bottom of the 10th inning the Crusaders forced the first batter to ground out, and Capen struck out the two remaining batters to secure the win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Both teams registered six hits in game one.
  • Both the Crusaders and the Bison left six runners on base.
  • Capen earned the win after allowing no runs on one hit in 2.1 innings pitched.

The Lead: Sophomore Thomas Russo (Weston, Mass.) drove in the game-winning run in the 14th inning as the Crusaders earned a 10-6 victory over Bucknell in game two of Saturday's doubleheader.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Crusaders jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning, as junior Alex Voitik (Shorewood, Ill.) scored on a wild pitch, Lovullo reached on a fielder's choice to score Russo and Hassell stole home.
  • Bucknell responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning, and added three more runs in the third to take a 5-3 lead.
  • In the seventh inning, Holy Cross notched three runs to give them a 6-5 lead over the Bison. O'Neill hit an RBI single to score freshman Travis Cloney (Wall, N.J.), and junior Anthony Critelli (Holmdel, N.J.) drove in a pair of runs with a double to right center that brought home O'Neill and Lovullo.
  • The Bison forced extra innings by tying the game up in the bottom of the ninth.
  • The Crusaders' offense came alive in the 14th inning, as they added four runs to give them the 10-4 lead. Russo earned 2 RBI with a double down the right field line to break the tie, senior Bobby Indeglia (North Kingston, R.I.) scored a runner after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Russo added the final run by scoring on a wild pitch.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Both teams registered 12 hits in game two.
  • Bucknell left 14 runners on base, while Holy Cross left 13.
  • Junior Joe Cravero (Hanover, N.H.) earned the win, pitching 2.0 innings in relief while allowing no runs and no hits, while freshman Pat McGowan (Wellesley, Mass.) pitched the final inning of the game and allowed no runs and no hits to earn the save.
  • Mike Castellani took the loss for Bucknell, allowing seven runs (four earned) on nine hits in 7.1 innings pitched.
  • Hassell led the Crusaders offense, going 3-for-7 with a run scored.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • McGowan's save was the first of his career.

  • Holy Cross is back in action tomorrow, as it closes its four-game series at Bucknell with a doubleheader at 12:00 p.m.
