Baseball Opens Patriot League Play With A Pair Of Wins Over Navy

GAME ONE

The Lead: Junior Brendan King (Brookline, Mass.) pitched five scoreless innings as the Crusaders opened Patriot League play with a 3-1 victory over Navy.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Crusaders jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. After junior Josh Hassell (Tulsa, Okla.) singled to center field, classmate Alex Voitik (Shorewood, Ill.) drove him home with an RBI double to left center. In the following at-bat, sophomore Cam O'Neill (Lynn, Mass.) singled to left field to score Voitik and give Holy Cross the 2-0 lead.
  • Holy Cross added another run in the top of the sixth, as junior Anthony Critelli (Holmdel, N.J.) hit a solo shot home run to left field, making it 3-0 in favor of the Crusaders.
  • The Midshipmen added a run in the bottom of the sixth, but were unable to overcome the deficit set by Holy Cross.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Navy outhit the Crusaders 6-5.
  • The Midshipmen left seven runners on base, while Holy Cross left three.
  • Junior Brendan King (Brookline, Mass.) pitched six innings while allowing one run on five hits, no walks and dealing seven strikeouts to earn the win. Junior Jon Escobar (Inverness, Ill.) pitched the final inning of the game, allowing no runs on one hit and earning one strikeout to get the save.
  • Luke Gillingham pitched the full game for Navy, allowing three runs on five hits in the loss.
  • Voitik led the Crusaders with eight putouts, while Critelli earned seven in the win.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • King improves to 3-2 on the season, and 6-3 in his career on the mound.
  • Escobar's save was his first of the season, and the fourth of his career.
  • Critelli's home run was his team-leading fifth of the season, and the 12th of his career.

Pitching Decision: W: Phil Reese (3-2) | L: George Coughlin (2-2)
Time: 2:40 p.m.
Location: Annapolis, Md. (Max Bishop Stadium)
The Lead: Junior Bill Schlich (Massapequa, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 with an RBI as the Crusaders defeated Navy by a score of 4-2 in their second game of the doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Crusaders jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. O'Neill led off the inning with a double down the left field line, and Schlich followed it up with a double down the right field line to score the run. Sophomore Thomas Russo (Weston, Mass.) singled on a bunt to third base, and advanced two bases off a steal attempt from Schlich and a base hit from freshman Travis Cloney (Wall, N.J.). Senior Nick Lovullo (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) would help bring home the run as he reached base on a fielding error by the third baseman.
  • Navy responded with a run in the bottom of the second inning, and added a second run to tie the game up in the bottom of the fourth.
  • Holy Cross added two more runs in the top of the seventh, as Voitik hit a double to left field to score Critelli and senior Bobby Indeglia (North Kingston, R.I.).

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Midshipmen outhit Holy Cross 9-8.
  • Both teams left nine runners on base.
  • Junior Phil Reese (Frederick, Md.) pitched six innings while allowing two runs on seven hits. Junior Joe Cravero (Hanover, N.H.) and senior Sean Gustin (Stoneham, Mass.) each pitched one inning in relief, as Escobar closed ou the game in the ninth to earn the save.
  • George Coughlin took the loss for Navy, pitching six innings while allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits.
  • Schlich led the Crusaders' offense, going 2-for-3 with an RBI at the plate.
  • Critelli and Voitik led Holy Cross with sex putouts each.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Reese improved to 3-2 on the season, and 7-11 in his career.
  • Escobar's save was his second of the season, and the fifth of his career.

  • The Crusaders return to action tomorrow as they wrap up their series against Navy with a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m.
