Holy Cross Splits Doubleheader With Army West Point

THE BASICS:

  • The Lead: Junior first baseman Anthony Critelli went three-for-eight with a home run and two runs scored, as the Holy Cross baseball team split a doubleheader with Army West Point at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field. The Crusaders won the first game 6-3, before the Black Knights came out on top in the nightcap 6-1.

 

HOW GAME 1 HAPPENED:

  • Holy Cross took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI double by senior designated hitter Connor Perry.
  • Army tied the game with an unearned run in the top of the third, before a solo home run by junior outfielder Josh Hassell in the fourth put the Crusaders up 2-1.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Holy Cross plated three more runs to make the score 5-1.
  • Junior outfielder Bill Schlich and sophomore third baseman Thomas Russo both had RBI singles in the inning, while junior catcher Alex Voitik drove in a run on a sacrifice bunt.
  • The Black Knights trimmed the margin to 5-3 in the top of the sixth on a two-run single by Brock Davidson, before an RBI single by sophomore second baseman Cam O'Neill in the bottom of the inning put Holy Cross back up by three (6-3).
  • Senior righthanded pitcher Sean Gustin then retired the Black Knights in order in the top of the seventh, to end the game and pick up his sixth save of the season.
  • Junior righthanded pitcher Brendan King earned the victory to improve to 5-2 on the year, allowing two earned runs on three hits with five strikeouts in 5-1/3 innings of work.

 

HOW GAME 2 HAPPENED:

  • After neither team scored in the first five innings, Army claimed a 4-0 lead in the top of the sixth.
  • Three walks loaded the bases, then Jacob Page hit a grand slam home run.
  • The Crusaders responded in the bottom of the sixth inning with a solo home run by Critelli, before the Black Knights added two more runs in the top of the ninth to put the game away.
  • Junior righthanded pitcher Phil Reese threw five shutout innings in a no decision, allowing just three hits while striking out three.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Perry went three-for-six on the day with a double and an RBI.
  • Russo finished the day three-for-seven with an RBI.

 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • The Crusaders remain in a three-way tie for first place in the Patriot League with Bucknell and Navy. All three teams stand at 6-4 in conference play.

 

UP NEXT:

  • Holy Cross and Army will conclude their weekend series tomorrow, April 17, with a doubleheader beginning at 1:05 p.m.
