  • The Lead: Junior outfielder Bill Schlich went four-for-eight with two doubles, two triples, two runs scored and two runs batted in, as the Holy Cross baseball team split a doubleheader with Lehigh at Legacy Park. The Crusaders won the first game 6-1, while the Mountain Hawks were victorious in the night cap 5-4.

 

HOW GAME 1 HAPPENED:

  • Holy Cross opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning, as junior catcher Alex Voitik had an RBI single and Schlich added an RBI triple.
  • The Crusaders plated three more runs in the top of the second inning to make the score 5-0.
  • Freshman designated hitter Travis Cloney started things off with a solo home run, followed by a sacrifice fly by sophomore second baseman Cam O'Neill and an RBI single by junior first baseman Anthony Critelli.
  • Lehigh scored its only run of the game on an RBI ground out by Mackey Price in the bottom of the second, before Holy Cross concluded the scoring with a solo home run by Critelli in the fifth.
  • Junior righthanded pitcher Brendan King earned the victory to improve to 4-2 on the season, throwing a seven-inning complete game while allowing only one run on five hits with four strikeouts.

 

HOW GAME 2 HAPPENED:

  • The Crusaders took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth on an RBI double by Schlich, before the Mountain Hawks tied the score in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Patrick Donnelly.
  • Lehigh pulled in front in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by James Bleming, then Holy Cross tied it back up in the sixth on junior outfielder Josh Hassell's RBI single.
  • In the top of the eighth inning, Cloney drove in a run to give the Crusaders a 3-2 advantage, but the Mountain Hawks reclaimed the lead (4-3) on a two-run single by Jacen Nalesnik in the bottom of the inning.
  • Holy Cross tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the ninth inning on a solo home run by Voitik.
  • But John Scarr delivered a walk-off RBI single for Lehigh in the bottom of the ninth to end the game.
  • Junior righthanded pitcher Phil Reese allowed just two runs on six hits with six strikeouts in 5-1/3 innings, but received a no decision.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Voitik went three-for-eight on the day with a double, a home run, three runs scored and two runs batted in.
  • Hassell reached base five times in game two, with two singles and three walks.

 

UP NEXT:

  • Holy Cross returns to action tomorrow, April 11, when it faces Lehigh in another doubleheader at Legacy Park, beginning at 12:00 p.m.
