  • The Lead: Holy Cross junior catcher Alex Voitik (Shorewood, Ill.) batted 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles, but the Crusaders fell in 10 innings to the University of Pennsylvania, 4-3, in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at Tradition Field of the New York Mets Spring Training Complex. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After two and a half scoreless frames, the Quakers grabbed the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning.
  • Penn added a pair of scores in the bottom half of the fourth to gain a 3-0 advantage, but the Crusaders answered in the top of the fifth, as junior Josh Hassell (Tulsa, Okla.) scored on a groundout by senior Nick Lovullo (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) to make the score 3-1.
  • Holy Cross sliced into the deficit in the top of the sixth, as Voitik scored on an RBI-double by Hassell to make it a one-run game (3-2).
  • The Crusaders were able to tie the game at 3-3 in the seventh, as Lovullo scored on a wild pitch.
  • Penn, however, ended the game in the bottom of the 10th inning with an RBI-single by Jonah Campbell to plate Matt O'Neill and make the score its final, 4-3.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Penn's Billy Lescher picked up the win (1-0), as he tossed 2.1 perfect innings of relief with a pair of strikeouts.
  • Crusader junior reliever George Capen (Gainesville, Md.) suffered the loss (0-1), as he allowed the game-winning run in the 10th inning.
  • Holy Cross junior starting pitcher Phil Reese (Frederick, Md.) tossed six innings on the afternoon and allowed three runs on 10 hits, while fanning a trio of batters.
  • Penn held the 15-7 advantage in total hits, as both teams had three extra-base hits apiece.

UP NEXT:

  • Holy Cross and Penn will wrap up their two-game set on Wednesday, March 9 with a 3:00 p.m. contest on Field Five of the Mets Spring Training Complex in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
