Holy Cross Tops Furman, 10-7

THE BASICS:
  • Score: Holy Cross 10, Furman 7
  • Records: HC (2-7); FUR (6-4)
  • Location: Greenville, S.C.
  • Date: March 6, 2016
  • The Lead: Holy Cross junior Alex Voitik (Shorewood, Ill.) batted 3-for-4 with four runs, two RBIs and a pair of solo home runs to help lead the Crusaders to a 10-7 victory over Furman in non-conference baseball action on Sunday afternoon at Latham Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After a scoreless first inning, Holy Cross struck in the top of the second, as Voitik launched a solo home run over the left-field fence to make the score 1-0.
  • Furman tied the game in the bottom of the third inning and gained the lead with a run in the fourth to grab a 2-1 edge.
  • Holy Cross, however, rallied in the top of the fifth. Voitik led off the inning with his second solo shot of the game to tie the contest at 2-2. Later in the fifth, junior Anthony Critelli (Holmdel, N.J.) drove in both senior Bobby Indeglia (North Kingstown, R.I.) and freshman Travis Cloney (Wall, N.J.) on a single to give the Crusaders a 4-2 advantage.
  • Furman answered in the bottom of the fifth with two scores to tie the game at 4-4.
  • Holy Cross put up a crooked number in the top of the sixth inning. Voitik led off the frame with a single and moved over to second on wild pitch. During the next at bat, Indeglia doubled down the right-field line to score Voitik and put Holy Cross up 5-4. Two batters later, Cloney plated Indeglia on a groundout to put the Crusaders ahead by two runs (6-4). Later in the frame, Critelli crossed home on a single by sophomore Cam O'Neill (Lynn, Mass.) to make it a three-run game (7-4).
  • Holy Cross added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh, as Indeglia and Voitik both scored during the frame to give the Crusaders a 9-4 lead.
  • Junior Josh Hassell (Tulsa, Okla.) scored in the top of the eighth on an error to put the Crusaders ahead 10-4.
  • Furman tried to mount a comeback, as it struck for three runs in the bottom of the eighth, but the Crusaders would hold on for the 10-7 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Holy Cross junior starting pitcher Brendan King (Brookline, Mass.) picked up the victory (2-0), as he allowed four runs on seven hits in five innings of work. King struck out six batters and only yielded a pair of walks.
  • Furman reliever Rutty Jones was charged with the loss (0-2), as he allowed three runs in the sixth inning.
  • Crusader senior closer Sean Gustin (Stoneham, Mass.) earned his second save of the season, as he pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
  • Both teams had 11 hits apiece, but Holy Cross held a 5-3 edge in extra-base hits.
  • In addition to Voitik for Holy Cross, Critelli also had a multiple-hit game as he batted 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI.
  • Indeglia went 1-for-3 with three runs scored.
