THE BASICS:

  • The Lead: Holy Cross junior Bill Schlich (Massapequa, N.Y.) batted 3-for-4 with two runs scored, a double and one RBI, but the Crusaders fell to Hartford, 8-4, in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday evening at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Hartford scored a run in the top of the first inning, but the Crusaders answered in the bottom half of the frame.
  • With two outs, junior Anthony Critelli (Holmdel, N.J.) singled into right field and scored on the next at-bat on an RBI-double by Schlich to tie the game at 1-1. Schlich scored on the next at-bat, as sophomore Cam O'Neill (Lynn, Mass.) traded places with him on a two-bagger over the left fielder's head to make the score 2-1.
  • The Hawks, however, scored a pair of runs in the second, third and fourth innings to go ahead 7-2.
  • After Hartford gained an 8-2 lead in the top of the eighth, Holy Cross cut into the deficit in the bottom of the frame, as sophomore Thomas Russo (Weston, Mass.) drew a bases-loaded walk to score Schlich and make the score 8-3.
  • Holy Cross tried to rally in the bottom of the ninth, but only scored one run on an RBI-double by O'Neill to plate Critelli and make the score its final, 8-4.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Hartford relief pitcher John Mormile picked up the win (1-0), as he tossed 2.1 no-hit innings with a trio of punchouts.
  • Holy Cross freshman righty Danny Barlok (Shrewsbury, Mass.) was charged with the loss (0-2), as he surrendered five earned runs on eight hits in four innings of work.
  • Crusader freshman reliever Pat McGowan (Wellesley, Mass.) appeared in his first collegiate game, and tossed three no-hit innings with four strikeouts and one walk.
  • Holy Cross held an 11-9 edge in total hits, but Hartford held a 4-2 advantage in extra-base hits.
  • O'Neill finished the game with a 2-for-4 clip at the plate with a pair of RBIs, while Lovullo (2-for-5) and Critelli (2-for-5) also had multiple-hit games for Holy Cross.
