Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Brown On Saturday

  • The Lead: Holy Cross junior starting pitcher Phil Reese (Frederick, Md.) allowed only two hits in six scoreless frames in game two, as the Crusaders split a doubleheader with Brown on Saturday afternoon. Brown won the first game, 2-1, and the Crusaders won the second contest, 9-0.

GAME 1 HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Holy Cross scored in the second inning, as senior Bobby Indeglia (North Kingston, R.I.) drove in sophomore Thomas Russo (Weston, Mass.) on a base knock to center field to make the score, 1-0.
  • Brown, however, grabbed the lead in the bottom of the fourth with two scores to gain a 2-1 lead.
  • The Crusaders were held hitless over the final three frames, as Brown held on for the 2-1 victory.

GAME 1 INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Brown starter Christian Taugner picked up the win (2-1), as he allowed only one run and three hits in seven innings pitched.
  • Holy Cross junior starting pitcher Brendan King (Brookline, Mass.) was charged with the loss (2-2), as he allowed two runs and two hits in six innings of work.
  • The Crusaders held the 3-2 edge in total hits.

GAME 2 HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After three scoreless frames, Holy Cross opened the scoring in the top of the fourth inning. Crusader junior Bill Schlich (Massapequa, N.Y.) drove in classmate Alex Voitik (Shorewood, Ill.) on an RBI-double to give Holy Cross a 1-0 lead. Later in the frame, Schlich crossed home on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Cam O'Neill (Lynn, Mass.) to make the score 2-0.
  • The Crusaders added a pair of scores in the top of the eighth to go ahead 4-0. Junior Anthony Critelli (Holmdel, N.J.) scored the first run of the frame on a Brown error, and Voitik scored the second run on an RBI-single by O'Neill.
  • In the top of the ninth, Voitik plated Critelli to give Holy Cross a 5-0 lead. Later in the frame, senior Shane Sandoval (Westerly, R.I.) launched a grand slam over the left-field fence to score O'Neill, Russo and Schlich to make the score its final, 9-0.

GAME 2 INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Reese picked up his second win of the season (2-2), has he allowed two hits and only one walk in six innings pitched, while striking out four batters.
  • Brown starter Reid Anderson was charged with the loss (0-2), as he allowed two runs on seven hits in seven innings of work.
  • Holy Cross held a 14-3 advantage in total hits and the 6-1 edge in extra-base hits.
  • Schlich (3-for-4) and Russo (3-for-5) each had three hits apiece, while Voitik (2-for-4), O'Neill (2-for-3) and Indeglia (2-for-4) had two hits each.
  • The home run for Sandoval was the first of his career.

UP NEXT:

  • Holy Cross returns to action on Sunday, March 27, when it hosts Brown in a doubleheader at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
