Crusaders Edged By UMass Lowell On Wednesday Night, 5-2

THE BASICS:
  • Score: UMass Lowell 5, Holy Cross 2
  • Records: UML (9-7); HC (6-13)
  • Location: Worcester, Mass.
  • Date: March 23, 2016
  • The Lead: Holy Cross junior Bill Schlich (Massapequa, N.Y.) batted 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, but the Crusaders fell to UMass Lowell, 5-2, in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday evening at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The teams played four scoreless innings and combined for only three hits, before UMass Lowell put up a crooked number in the top of the fifth with four runs to make the score 4-0.
  • Holy Cross, however, answered in the bottom half of the fifth inning. With one out, senior Shane Sandoval (Westerly, R.I.) singled through the right side and moved over to second on a walk by classmate Bobby Indeglia (North Kingstown, R.I.).
  • After senior Nick Lovullo (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) walked to load the bases, junior Josh Hassell (Tulsa, Okla.) drew a free pass to score Sandoval and cut the margin to 4-1. Junior Anthony Critelli (Holmdel, N.J.) then lined a single into left field to plate Indeglia and make the score 4-2.
  • UMass Lowell, however, was able to get out of the fifth with a double play to preserve the two-run lead.
  • The River Hawks added an insurance run in the top of the seventh to make the score its final, 5-2.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Holy Cross freshman starting pitcher Danny Barlok (Shrewsbury, Mass.) was charged with the loss (0-1) in his first collegiate start. Barlok tossed four-plus innings and surrendered three runs on three hits, while walking two and fanning seven batters.
  • UMass Lowell reliever Kendall Pomeroy picked up the win (2-0), as he allowed two hits and a walk in 1.2 shutout innings. River Hawk closer Brendan Long picked up his fifth save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning of work.
  • Crusader junior reliever Jon Escobar (Inverness, Ill.) tossed 1.2 perfect innings out of the bullpen and recorded three punchouts – all coming in a 1-2-3 eighth inning.
  • UMass Lowell held a 9-5 advantage in total hits, as both teams had two extra-base hits apiece.

UP NEXT:

  • Holy Cross returns to action on Saturday, March 26, when it heads to Providence, R.I. to take on Brown in a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m.
