Baseball Splits Doubleheader At Yale

  • The Lead: Sophomore Thomas Russo (Weston, Mass.) combined for four hits with two RBIs, while junior starter Phil Reese (Frederick, Md.) pitched 7.1 shutout innings to earn the win in the second game as the Holy Cross baseball team split a doubleheader with Yale in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon at Yale Field. The Bulldogs won the first game by a 10-5 score, while the Crusaders took the second game, 8-1.

GAME 1

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Crusaders took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when senior Connor Perry (Haverhill, Mass.) recorded an RBI on a ground out to first base which brought in senior Nick Lovullo (Thousand Oaks, Calif.). But the Bulldogs responded in the bottom of the first by scoring three runs to take a 3-1 lead.
  • Yale would add to its lead by scoring one run in the third, five in the fifth and one in the sixth to move out to a 10-1 advantage.
  • In the top of the ninth and with one out, freshman Kellen McCormick (Rockford, Ill.) scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 10-2. Russo then drove in junior Bill Schlich (Massapequa, N.Y.) on a single to center field. With two outs, freshman Devin McGrath (Greenwich, Conn.) doubled to left center bringing in Lovullo and Russo to make the score 10-5. But the Bulldogs were then able to get the final out for the 10-5 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Yale starting pitcher Scott Politz picked up the win (1-2), as he allowed one run on seven hits in eight innings. Politz struck out six and only issued one free pass.
  • Holy Cross junior starter Brendan King (Brookline, Mass.) was charged with the loss (2-1), as he surrendered nine runs with seven earned on nine hits in 4.1 innings pitched.
  • Yale held the 11-10 edge in total hits.

GAME 2

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • In game two, the Crusaders took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. Junior Alex Voitik (Shorewood, Ill.) scored on a wild pitch, while Russo hit a sacrifice fly to left field bringing in Schlich.
  • The Crusaders made the score 3-0 in the fifth when senior Bobby Indeglia (North Kingston, R.I.) doubled to left field scoring Russo.
  • The Crusaders took a 6-0 lead in the seventh inning. Both Lovullo and junior Josh Hassell (Tulsa, Okla.) walked with the bases loaded, while Voitik record a RBI with a sacrifice fly to center field.
  • In the top of the eighth, the Crusaders added two runs to make it an 8-0 game. Russo scored on a ground out by freshman Travis Cloney (Wall, N.J.). After Lovullo walked, Hassell tripled to left center.
  • Yale scored one run in the bottom of the ninth for the 8-1 final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Reese picked up the win (1-2), as he allowed no runs with four strikeouts on six hits in 7.1 innings pitched.
  • Yale starter Kumar Nambiar was charged with the loss (0-2), as he allowed three runs on six hits in five innings.
  • The Crusaders held the 10-9 edge in total hits.
  • Russo went 3-for-3.
