  • The Lead: Junior first baseman Anthony Critelli (Holmdel, N.J.) drove in both Holy Cross runs with a two-run homer, but the Crusaders were edged by South Florida, 3-2, in non-conference baseball action on Sunday morning at USF Baseball Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After two-and-a-half scoreless frames, South Florida broke the stalemate in the bottom of the third, as David Villar hit a two-run home run to give the hosts a 2-0 lead.
  • Holy Cross was able to get its first hit of the game in the top of the seventh inning, as Critelli hit his second long ball of the year over the left-field fence, which scored junior Josh Hassell (Tulsa, Okla.) and tied the game at 2-2.
  • The Bulls, however, pushed across the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth to make the score its final, 3-2.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • South Florida starting pitcher Joe Cavallaro picked up the win (2-0), as he allowed two runs on two hits in eight innings of work. Cavallaro walked four and struck out six batters. Bulls closer Andrew Perez picked up the save with a perfect ninth inning.
  • Holy Cross junior starter Phil Reese (Frederick, Md.) went six innings in the no-decision and allowed two runs on six hits, while fanning four.
  • Crusader junior reliever Zach Fox (Los Gatos, Calif.) was charged with the loss (0-1), as he allowed one run on four hits in 1.2 innings pitched.
  • South Florida held a 10-2 advantage in total hits and a 2-1 edge in extra-base hits.

  • Holy Cross returns to action on Tuesday, March 15, when it travels to Chestnut Hill, Mass. to take on Boston College at 3:00 p.m.
