THE LEAD: Three different players scored for the Black Knights in front of a sold out crowd of 2,686 at Tate Rink, as the Holy Cross men's ice hockey team fell to Army West Point, 3-1, on Saturday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- At 3:40 of the first period, Conor Andrle sent a shot on goal from the right circle and the rebound was batted in by C.J. Reuschlein to give Army West Point the 1-0 lead.
- At 6:23 of the first period, and with the Black Knights shorthanded, Taylor Maruya moved through the slot on a two-on-one opportunity and wristed a shot from the right circle that beat sophomore goalie Paul Berrafato (Williamsville, N.Y.) on the blocker side to give Army a 2-0 lead.
- At 14:26 of the first period, Army extended the lead to 3-0 as Christian Pomarico sent a shot on goal and Brendan McGuire found the rebound loose in the crease and tapped it over Berrafato's glove side.
- Army outshot the Crusaders 12-11 in the first period, while each team went 0-1 on the power play.
- At 14:01 of the second period and with the Crusaders on the man-advantage, sophomore forward Scott Pooley (Grander, Ind.) ripped a shot on goal from the right circle, and the rebound bounced out to sophomore forward Danny Lopez (Barrington Hills, Ill.) at the left circle who one-timed into the open side to cut the lead to 3-1. Freshman defenseman Spencer Trapp (White City, Saskatchewan) also recorded an assist on the goal.
- Army outshot the Crusaders 8-7- in the second period, while the Crusaders went 1-2 on the only man-advantages of the period.
- With 1:43 remaining in the third period, the Crusaders went with an empty net as they trailed 3-1.
- The Crusaders were unable to find the back of the net in the final minute as they fell 3-1 to Army West Point.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Each team tallied 29 shots on goal.
- Berrafato recorded 26 saves, while Gahagen tallied 28 saves for the Black Knights.
- The Crusaders went 1-5 on the power play, while Army went 0-3.
- Army won 43 face-offs, while the Crusaders won 33.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Lopez's goal is his seventh of the season.
- Senior assistant captain Brett Lubanski (Farmington Hills, Mich.) is tied for ninth all-time in the history of the program in games played.
- Chief of Staff of the Army, General Mark A. Milley performed the ceremonial puck drop.
