Mifsud Scores 1000th But Crusaders Fall To Bucknell, 74-64

THE BASICS:

  • The Lead: Holy Cross senior guard Lisa Mifsud (Erie, Pa.) became the 32nd Crusader to score 1,000 career points, as she totaled 11 in the contest, but the Crusaders were defeated by Bucknell, 74-64, in Patriot League women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Sojka Pavilion.

TURNING POINT:

  • Holy Cross held a 33-30 lead at the 9:32-mark of the third quarter, but Bucknell erupted on a 21-5 surge over the next 7:19 to grab a 51-38 advantage (2:13). The Crusaders would not regain the lead for the remainder of the contest.

HOLY CROSS HIGHLIGHTS:

  • In addition to Mifsud, sophomore guard Infiniti Thomas-Waheed (Newton, Mass.) recorded her first career double-double with team-highs of 17 points, a personal-best 11 rebounds and three steals.
  • Sophomore guard Tricia Byrne (Dunmore, Pa.) tied a career-high with 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting with four assists, while senior center Molly Hourigan (Memphis, N.Y.) hauled in 10 rebounds. Senior guard Kate Gillespie (Washington, D.C.) scored eight points.

FIRST HALF:

  • Bucknell jumped out to a 15-7 lead at the 2:34-mark of the first quarter, but five straight points by Thomas-Waheed sliced the deficit to 15-12 (1:17).
  • The teams each scored two points over the final minute, as the Bison held a 17-14 lead through one quarter of play.
  • Holy Cross used a 5-0 spurt to begin the second stanza and went ahead 19-17 (6:44), but a jumper by Bucknell on the next possession tied the contest at 19-19 (6:21).
  • With the game all square at 23-23 at the 4:10-mark of the second quarter, Holy Cross embarked on an 8-2 rally over the next 2:07 to gain a 31-25 lead (2:03).
  • Bucknell, however, closed the first half on a 5-0 run, as Holy Cross went into the locker room with a 31-30 edge.

SECOND HALF:

  • Thomas-Waheed gave Holy Cross a 33-30 lead just 28 seconds into the third quarter, but Bucknell went on a 21-5 rally over the next 7:19 to gain a 51-38 advantage (2:13).
  • The Bison went into the fourth quarter leading by 11 points (53-42).
  • Bucknell held a 12-point, 59-47 lead with 6:29 left in the fourth quarter, but the Crusaders clawed their way back into the game.
  • Byrne ignited the run with a jumper and Mifsud made it a seven-point game (59-52) with a three-pointer at the 4:07-mark for her 1,000th point.
  • After a pair of free throws by Thomas-Waheed sliced the margin to five points (59-54), Mifsud buried another three-pointer to make it a one-possession game (59-57) with three minutes left in the fourth.
  • Bucknell hit a jumper to end the Holy Cross 10-0 run to go ahead by four points (61-57), but a three-pointer by Byrne with 2:21 on the clock cut the deficit to one point (61-60).
  • The Bison, however, scored nine quick points over the next 1:31 to go ahead by 10 points (70-60) with 49 ticks on the clock.
  • Holy Cross got as close as six points (70-64) with 31 seconds left, but the Bison went 4-of-4 from the charity stripe to clinch the victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Holy Cross shot 31.8 percent from the field (21-66), while Bucknell connected on 24-of-60 from the floor (40.0%).
  • The Crusaders canned 9-of-24 from long range (37.5%), while the Bison drained 28.6 percent from downtown (6-21).
  • Holy Cross shot 13-of-20 from the free-throw line (65.0%) while Bucknell hit 71.4 percent of its shots from the charity stripe (20-28).
  • Bucknell held the statistical edge in total rebounds (46-44), assists (17-9), points in the paint (30-12) and points off turnovers (14-9).
  • The Crusaders held the 14-9 edge in offensive rebounds and the 28-16 advantage in points off the bench.
  • Bucknell was led by Jacquie Klotz, who recorded 11 points and 14 rebounds. Claire DeBoer (17), Kate Walker (15) and Kailyn Slagus (10) all recorded double-digit points for the hosts.

NEWS & NOTES:

  • With a three-pointer at the 4:07-mark of the fourth quarter, Mifsud became the 32nd player in Holy Cross history and the 95th player in Patriot League history to score 1,000 career points.
  • Mifsud also moved into a tie for sixth place on the Holy Cross all-time three-pointers made list, with 144 treys in her career.
