THE LEAD: Trailing 2-0 in the third period, sophomore forwards Brett Mulcahy (Kelowna, British Columbia) and Ryan Ferrill (Havertown, Pa.) scored for the Crusaders as the Holy Cross men's hockey team tied Army West Point 2-2 on Friday night. This is the first time in program history that the Crusaders have played five straight overtime games.The Crusaders (27 points) are tied for third place with Air Force (27 points), just one-point behind second-place RIT (28 points) and two points behind first-place Robert Morris (30 points).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- With 38 seconds remaining in the first period, Conor Andrle sent a pass from behind the net, to Tyler Pham, who blasted a one-timer from the slot, giving Army West Point the 1-0 lead.
- The Black Knights outshot the Crusaders 8-7 in the first period, while each team went 0-1 on the man-advantage.
- At 12:02 of the second period, sophomore forward Scott Pooley (Granger, Ind.) moved through the slot on a breakaway opportunity, yet his backhander was turned away by Parker Gahagen to keep it a 1-0 game.
At 14:41 of the second period and with Army on the power play, Pham delivered a pass to Andrle who wristed a shot from the right circle that beat sophomore goalie Paul Berrafato (Williamsville, N.Y.) on the glove side to make it 2-0 Army.
- The Crusaders outshot the Army 15-6 in the second period, going 0-3 on the power play, while Army went 1-1.
- At 4:33 of the third period, freshman defenseman Spencer Trapp (White City, Saskatchewan) blasted a one-timer on goal from the blue line and the rebound bounced out to sophomore forward Mulcahy at the left circle and his wrist shot beat Gahagen on the blocker side to make it 2-1. Sophomore defenseman Tommy Muratore (Mendham, N.J) also recorded an assist on the goal.
- At 7:42 of the third period, Ferrill received the puck in the slot after an Army turnover, and he wristed a shot that beat Gahagen high on the glove side to tie the score at 2-2.
- The score remained tied at 2-2 as the teams began overtime.
- Neither team was able to tally the game-winner during overtime as the Crusaders and Black Knights tied 2-2.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- The Crusaders outshot Army, 40-21.
- Berrafato recorded 19 saves, while Gahagen tallied 38 saves for the Black Knights.
- The Crusaders went 0-5 on the power play, while Army went 1-2.
- Army won 36 face-offs, while the Crusaders won 32.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- This is the first time in program history that the Crusaders have played five straight overtime games.
- The Crusaders are 2-1-5 this season in overtime.
- Senior assistant captain Brett Lubanski (Farmington Hills, Mich.) is now tied for 10th all-time in the Division I history of the program in games played.
