Crusaders Complete Come-From-Behind Victory Over Colgate, 70-61

THE BASICS:

  • Score: Holy Cross 70, Colgate 61

  • The Lead: Holy Cross sophomore guard Infiniti Thomas-Waheed (Newton, Mass.) posted team-highs of 18 points and four steals to help lead the Crusaders to a 70-61 victory over Colgate in Patriot League women's basketball action on Wednesday evening at the Hart Center.

TURNING POINT:

  • With the score knotted at 61-61, Thomas-Waheed hit a running layup off an offensive rebound by senior center Molly Hourigan (Memphis, N.Y.) to put the Crusaders ahead 63-61 (1:29).
  • After a Colgate miss on the other end, Holy Cross sophomore guard Katie Doherty (Holbrook, N.Y.) drilled a three-pointer with 36 ticks on the clock to give the Crusaders a 66-61 advantage.
  • Thomas-Waheed and Hourigan each hit two free throws apiece in the closing seconds to clinch the victory for the Crusaders.

HOLY CROSS HIGHLIGHTS:

  • In addition to Thomas-Waheed for Holy Cross, senior guard Lisa Mifsud (Erie, Pa.) totaled 13 points and a game-high six assists.
  • Doherty and sophomore guard Tricia Byrne (Dunmore, Pa.) each posted 13 points and three rebounds, while Hourigan hauled in a game-high 11 rebounds.

FIRST HALF:

  • Holy Cross jumped out to a 10-7 lead midway through the first quarter, as Thomas-Waheed scored eight points during the early Crusader run.
  • Colgate, however, doubled up Holy Cross, 8-4, over the final five minutes of the stanza to gain a 15-14 dege through one quarter of play.
  • The Raiders continued their run and posted a 20-14 lead 50 seconds into the second quarter on a Josie Stockill layup. Colgate held a five-point, 24-19, margin at the 6:42-mark of the period, but back-to-back three-pointers by Byrne and Mifsud gave the Crusaders a 25-24 edge (5:33).
  • The Raiders answered with a three of their own to go back ahead by two (27-25), but another trey by Byrne put the Crusaders ahead, 28-25 (5:03).
  • Colgate kept the threes coming with another one on its next possession to grab a 30-28 lead, but two free throws by Mifsud tied the contest at 30-30 (4:30).
  • The Raiders ended the quarter on an 8-3 spurt to head into the locker room with a 38-33 advantage.

SECOND HALF:

  • Colgate pushed its lead to six points on two occasions to begin the third quarter, as it held a 43-37 lead with 5:11 on the clock. Holy Cross, however, erupted on an 11-3 rally to earn a 48-46 lead on the back of a Thomas-Waheed jumper (2:37). Doherty drilled a pair of three-pointers during the Holy Cross surge.
  • The Raiders countered with a 7-2 run over the final two-plus minutes of the third to head into the fourth quarter with a 53-50 advantage.
  • Colgate held a three-point, 55-52, edge with 8:12 left in the fourth, but the Crusaders would begin their comeback. At the 6:20-mark, Byrne ignited the rally with a three-pointer to tie the contest at 55-55.
  • Mifsud scored on a layup at the 4:50-mark and Byrne drilled a jumper in the paint with 3:44 on the clock to give the Crusaders a 59-55 lead.
  • Colgate, however, got a clutch three-pointer by Paige Kriftcher to slice the deficit to 59-58 with 2:54 left in the regulation. After Doherty connected on two free throws to put Holy Cross up by three (61-58), Colgate's Katie Curtis canned a trey with two minutes on the clock to tie the contest at 61-61.
  • On the next possession, Doherty missed a three-pointer, but an offensive rebound by Hourigan and a layup by Thomas-Waheed gave the Crusaders a 63-61 lead (1:29).
  • The Raiders missed a layup on the other end and Doherty made them pay with a three-pointer to put Holy Cross ahead by five (66-61) with 36 seconds left on the clock.
  • The Crusaders sank all four of their free throws over the waning seconds of the game to clinch the come-from-behind victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Holy Cross shot 32.4 percent from the field (22-68) and connected on 11-of-31 from behind the arc (35.5%), while Colgate hit 39.1 percent from the floor (18-46) and drained 9-of-19 from downtown (47.4%).
  • The Crusaders held the statistical edge in total rebounds (45-33), offensive rebounds (18-5), assists (16-13), steals (10-3), second-chance points (11-0) and points in the paint (20-14).
  • Colgate has led by Kriftcher, who scored a game-high 22 points, while Curtis tallied 18 points and five assists.

NEWS & NOTES:

  • Holy Cross set season highs in total rebounds (45), three-pointers made (11) and three-pointers attempted (31).
  • The Crusaders improve to 52-5 all-time against Colgate and have now won three straight over the Raiders.
  • Holy Cross also advances its record to 7-3 in games played at the Hart Center this season, including a 4-1 home mark in Patriot League games.
  • Freshman forward Maggie Locke (Collegeville, Pa.) hauled in a career-high six rebounds.
