  • The Lead: Holy Cross junior right-handed pitcher Ben White (Holden, Mass.) tossed six strong innings and allowed only one earned run on four hits with seven punchouts, but the Crusaders fell to William & Mary in the bottom of the ninth inning, 6-5, in non-conference baseball action on Saturday afternoon at Plumeri Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Holy Cross opened up the scoring in the top of the first inning, as senior Connor Perry (Haverhill, Mass.) belted a two-run shot to score junior Josh Hassell (Tulsa, Okla.) and give the Crusaders a 2-0 lead.
  • Hassell scored again for the Crusaders in the top of the third inning, this time on an RBI-double by junior Anthony Critelli (Holmdel, N.J.) to put the visitors ahead, 3-0.
  • The Tribe, however, sliced into the deficit with a run in both the third and fourth innings to make the score 3-2.
  • The Crusaders picked up a run in the top of the fifth, as sophomore Cam O'Neill (Lynn, Mass.) plated senior Nick Lovullo (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) on a fielder's choice to give Holy Cross a 4-2 edge.
  • In the top of the sixth, the Crusaders gained a 5-2 lead on an RBI-single by Hassell to score sophomore Thomas Russo (Weston, Mass.).
  • In the bottom of the seventh, however, William & Mary was able to push three runners across the plate to tie the game at 5-5.
  • Holy Cross had a chance to break the stalemate in the top of the ninth, as it had runners on second and third with one out, but the Tribe were able to get out of the jam with a ground out and fly out to end the inning.
  • William & Mary ended the game in the bottom of the ninth, as a sacrifice fly by Josh Smith plated Kyle Wrighte from third base to make the score its final, 6-5.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Although charged with the loss (0-1), Holy Cross junior Justin Finan (Barrington, R.I.) allowed only one earned run on five hits in 2.1 innings of work.
  • William & Mary reliever Andrew White earned the victory (1-0), as he pitched a no-hit ninth inning.
  • Holy Cross held the 11-9 edge in total hits, as both teams had three extra-base hits apiece.
  • Hassell finished the game with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI.
  • Lovullo (2-for-5), Critelli (2-for-4, 2 2B) and Russo (2-for-4) also had multiple-hit games for Holy Cross.
