Baseball Holy Cross Athletics

Baseball Drops Contest At William & Mary, 8-5

THE BASICS:

  • Score: William & Mary 8, Holy Cross 5
  • Records: WM (3-2); Holy Cross (1-3)
  • Location: Williamsburg, Va.
  • Date: Feb. 26, 2016
  • The Lead: Holy Cross senior Bobby Indeglia (North Kingstown, R.I.) batted 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, but the Crusaders were defeated by William & Mary, 8-5, in non-conference baseball action on Friday evening at Plumeri Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Holy Cross opened the game's scoring in the top of the first inning, as senior Nick Lovullo (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) belted a solo home run over the left-field fence to give the Crusaders a 1-0 edge.
  • The Tribe, however, grabbed the lead in the bottom half of the first. Ryan Hall led off the frame with a solo shot, while Charles Ameer hit a three-run home run later in the inning to give William & Mary a 4-1 advantage.
  • The Crusaders cut into the deficit in the top of the second inning, as sophomore Thomas Russo (Weston, Mass.) drove in junior Bill Schlich (Massapequa, N.Y.) on an RBI-single to make the score 4-2, after Schlich got into scoring position with a one-out double.
  • William & Mary struck for a pair of runs in the bottom of the second to increase its lead to 6-2, but the Crusaders responded in the top half of the third inning. Lovullo led off the third with a walk and scored during the next at-bat on an RBI-double by junior Anthony Critelli (Holmdel, N.J.). Crusader senior Connor Perry (Haverhill, Mass.) then drove in Critelli on an RBI-single to make the score 6-4. Perry scored later in the inning on an RBI-groundout by Schlich to slice the margin to 6-5.
  • The Tribe tallied two more runs in the bottom of the third inning to gain an 8-5 advantage.
  • After not getting a runner to third base from the fourth to eighth innings, Holy Cross had a chance to score in the top of the ninth. With two outs, Perry singled up the middle and moved over the third on a base hit by sophomore Cam O'Neill (Lynn, Mass.). William & Mary, however, was able to retire the final Crusader of the inning and claim an 8-5 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • William & Mary starter Nick Brown picked up the win (1-1), as he allowed four earned runs on seven hits in five innings of work. Joseph Gaouette pitched the ninth inning for his second save of the season.
  • Holy Cross junior starting pitcher Phil Reese (Frederick, Md.) was charged with the loss (0-2), as he surrendered seven earned runs on eight hits in 2.1 innings pitched.
  • Holy Cross junior reliever Joe Cravero (Hanover, N.H.) tossed three no-hit innings and struck out a pair.
  • Crusader junior pitcher George Capen (Gainesville, Va.) tossed 0.2 perfect innings with a punchout, while classmate Jon Escobar (Inverness, Ill.) pitched a perfect seventh inning with a pair of strikeouts.
