Holy Cross Falls To Army West Point On Wednesday Night

THE BASICS:
  • Score: Army West Point 80, Holy Cross 49

  • The Lead: Army West Point's Kelsey Minato totaled 21 points, six rebounds and nine assists to help lead the visiting Black Knights to an 80-49 victory over Holy Cross in Patriot League women's basketball action on Wednesday evening at the Hart Center.

TURNING POINT:

  • After leading by as many as 15 points, Army held a 10-point, 51-41 lead with 51 seconds left in the third quarter.
  • The Black Knights then erupted on a 15-0 run over the next 4:16 to put the game out of reach, and gained a 66-41 advantage at the 6:35-mark of the fourth quarter.
  • Holy Cross would get no closer than 22 points for the remainder of the contest.

HOLY CROSS HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Crusader sophomore guard Katie Doherty (Holbrook, N.Y.) led Holy Cross with team-highs of 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
  • Senior guard Lisa Mifsud (Erie, Pa.) totaled eight points, while classmate Molly Hourigan (Memphis, N.Y.) recorded seven points and six caroms.
  • Sophomore forward Amy Hasenauer (Greece, N.Y.) tallied a career-high eight points.  

FIRST HALF:

  • Army West Point held the 6-4 edge midway through the first quarter, but a 10-1 surge by the Black Knights put them ahead 16-5 with 2:11 on the clock.
  • Mifsud ended the run with a pair of free throws with 21 ticks left in the period, but a layup just five seconds later by Army West Point gave it an 18-7 lead through one quarter of play.
  • Holy Cross cut the deficit to nine points (20-11) just 1:16 into the second quarter, but a 10-4 run by Army West Point gave it a 30-15 lead (2:50).
  • The Crusaders outscored the Black Knights 6-2 over the final two-plus minutes and trailed Army West Point, 32-21, at intermission.

SECOND HALF:

  • Holy Cross worked the deficit to eight points (36-28) just over three minutes into the third quarter (6:52), but seven quick points put Army West Point back up by 15 (43-28) with 5:53 on the clock.
  • The Crusaders sliced the margin to 10 points on three occasions during the stanza and trailed the Black Knights, 51-41, with 51 ticks left.
  • Army West Point, however, scored four straight to end the third quarter and then tallied 11 consecutive points to begin the fourth to go ahead by 25 points (66-41) with 6:35 on the clock.
  • The Black Knights outscored the Crusaders 14-8 the rest of the way to claim a 31-point victory (80-49).

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Army West Point shot a blistering 50.8 percent from the field (33-65) and drained 6-of-16 from behind the arc (37.5%), while the Crusaders connected on 39.2 percent from the floor (20-51), but only managed to hit 1-of-17 from downtown (5.9%).
  • The Black Knights held the statistical edge in points in the paint (48-24), points off turnovers (30-6), fast-break points (12-4) and steals (11-5). The Crusaders held a 33-30 edge in total rebounds.
  • In addition to Minato for Army West Point, Janae McNeal (17), Aimee Oertner (12) and Destinee Morris (11) all recorded double-digit points.

  • Holy Cross returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 20, when it travels to Washington, D.C. to take on American at 2:00 p.m.
