THE LEAD: Sophomore Scott Pooley (Granger, Ind.) led the Crusaders with one goal and one assist as the Holy Cross men's hockey team tied Canisius, 2-2, on Friday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Crusaders outshot Canisus 25-6 in the opening period, while Canisius went 0-1 on the only man-advantage of the period.
- At 3:01 of the second period, Josh Supryka moved through the slot on a breakaway opportunity, yet his backhander was stopped by sophomore goalie Paul Berrafato (Williamsville, N.Y.) to keep the contest knotted at 0-0.
- At 8:53 of the second period, freshman defenseman Spencer Trapp (White City, Saskatchewan) blasted a shot on goal from the blue line, and the rebound was collected by Pooley, who wrapped around the goal and ripped a shot into the top right corner of the net to make it 1-0 Crusaders. Freshman forward Michael Laffin (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) also recorded an assist on the goal.
- At 10:06 of the second period, Canisius answered as Cameron Heath fired a slap shot from the blue line on goal, and the rebound bounced out to Ralph Cuddemi, who buried it in the open side of the goal to make it 1-1.
- At 11:39 of the second period, Mike Sabatini sent a cross-ice pass through the slot to Jeff Murray, who wristed a shot from the right circle that found the back of the net above Berrafato's glove side to make it 2-1 Griffs.
- At 16:43 of the second period, senior assistant captain Joe McNamara (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) sent a pass from his own defensive zone up the boards to Pooley, who chipped it to senior forward Castan Sommer (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and he wristed a shot from the right circle that beat Simon Hofley low on the glove side to make it 2-2.
- The Griffs outshot the Crusaders 10-8 in the second period.
- Neither team tallied a goal during the third period, as overtime began.
- Each team recorded four shots on goal during the overtime period.
- Through five minutes of overtime, neither team was able to find the back of the net, as the Crusaders and Griffs tied 2-2.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Holy Cross outshot Canisus 51-30 in the contest.
- Berrafato recorded 28 saves, while Holfey tallied 49 saves.
- Canisus went 0-1 on the only power-play of the game.
- Holy Cross won 39 face-offs, while Canisus won 32.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Pooley's goal is his 10th of the season
- McNamara's 46 career assists are fifth all time by a defenseman in the Divison I history of the program.
- McNamara is the eighth defenseman in the Division I history of the program to post 50 points or more. Senior Jake Bolton (Ellington, Conn.) also has posted over 50 career points with 51.
- The Crusaders are in second place in Atlantic Hockey with 24 points, as they trail Robert Morris by two points.
- The Crusaders are now 8-2-1 at home this season.
- The Crusaders are 2-0-2 in overtime this season.
- The Crusaders tallied a season high 51 shots on goal in the contest.
- The Crusaders' 13-8-2 overall record is the best since the 2005-2006 season when the Crusaders were 16-6-1.
- The Crusaders' 11-4-2 conference record is the best since the 2005-2006 season when the team was 12-4-1.
