Crusaders Fall To Army West Point On Wednesday Evening

  • The Lead: Army West Point senior guard Kelsey Minato scored a game-high 26 points on 9-of-14 shooting to help lead the Black Knights to a 77-58 victory over Holy Cross in Patriot League women's basketball action on Wednesday evening at Christl Arena.

TURNING POINT:

  • Army held the 48-41 edge with 6:39 left in the third quarter after Holy Cross senior guard Lisa Mifsud (Erie, Pa.) drilled a three-pointer. The Black Knights, however, put the game out of reach with an 18-2 surge to end the third stanza and head into the fourth quarter with a 66-43 lead. Holy Cross would get no closer than 19 points for the remainder of the contest.

HOLY CROSS HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Holy Cross was led by Mifsud, who tallied a team-high 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting, to go along with two assists and a pair of steals. Senior center Molly Hourigan (Memphis, N.Y.) totaled nine points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots, while sophomore guard Tricia Byrne (Dunmore, Pa.) posted nine points, six rebounds and a pair of assists.
  • Sophomore guard Infiniti Thomas-Waheed (Newton, Mass.) scored nine points, while classmate Katie Doherty (Holbrook, N.Y.) chipped in with seven points and four boards.

FIRST HALF:

  • Army West Point grabbed an early 7-4 lead at the 7:40-mark of the first quarter. Holy Cross, however, went on an 8-0 run over the next 1:45 to go ahead 12-7, as Thomas-Waheed ignited the run with back-to-back three-pointers.
  • The Black Knights countered the Crusaders' run with a rally of their own, scoring nine straight points to gain a 16-12 edge (4:21), but Holy Cross rallied back and cut the deficit to two points (22-20) after one quarter of play.
  • Doherty hit a running layup to begin the second quarter and tied the game at 22-22, but the Black Knights embarked on a 12-0 surge over the next 4:02 to gain a 34-22 advantage (5:19).
  • Byrne ended the Army run with back-to-back buckets to slice the margin to 34-26 (4:19), but the Black Knights wrapped up the first half on a 7-5 spurt to head into the locker room with the 10-point, 41-31 lead.

SECOND HALF:

  • Holy Cross cut the Black Knight-lead to seven points (48-41) on a Mifsud trey at the 6:39-mark of the third quarter, but Army exploded on an 18-2 rally to claim a 66-43 lead after three-quarters of play. Over the final 6:39 of the third stanza, Army drilled four three-pointers and all six of its free throws, while the Crusaders missed all six of their shots from the field.
  • The Black Knights earned their largest lead of the game (76-48) with 4:05 left in the fourth quarter, but the Crusaders finished the contest on a 10-1 run to make the score its final, 77-58.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Army shot 45.6 percent from the field (26-57) and connected on 11-of-27 from behind the arc (40.7%), while Holy Cross drained 41.2 percent from the floor (21-51) and hit on 6-of-18 from downtown (33.3%).
  • The Black Knights canned 14-of-18 from the free-throw line (77.8%), while the Crusaders sank 10-of-16 from the charity stripe (62.5%).
  • Army held the statistical edge in total rebounds (42-24), offensive rebounds (13-5), assists (16-8) and second-chance points (11-7).

NEWS & NOTES:

  • Mifsud made her 75th career start for Holy Cross, while Doherty started in her 50th consecutive game as a Crusader.
  • Holy Cross is now 34-25 all-time against Army West Point and has dropped four straight to the Black Knights.
