THE LEAD: With the game tied at 4-4, David Freidmann scored the game-winner for the Colonials with 41 seconds remaining in the third period as the Holy Cross men's hockey team fell to Robert Morris, 5-4, on Friday night. The Colonials are in first place in Atlantic Hockey with 25 points (11-3-3), while the Crusaders are second with 21 points (10-4-1). Sophomore forward T.J. Moore (Edina, Minn.) recorded two goals for the Crusaders.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- At 3:23 of the first period, senior defenseman Karl Beckman (Okemos, Mich.) sent a wrist shot from the blue line which deflected off of sophomore forward Ryan Ferrill (Havertown, Pa.) in front of the goal to give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead.
- At 11:43 of the first period and with Robert Morris on the power play, Chase Golightly sent a wrist shot from the point which was deflected by Brandon Denham, and found the back of the net to make it 1-1.
- The Crusaders outshot the Colonials 12-5 in the first period, going 0-1 on the man advantage, while Robert Morris went 1-2.
- At 5:21 of the second period, senior forward Tim Driscoll (Hingham, Mass.) carried the puck around the goal, moved up to the blue line, then sent a saucer pass to senior assistant captain Brett Lubanski (Farmington Hills, Mich.) in front of the net, as he sent a backhander on goal which beat Shafer high on the glove side to make it 2-1 Crusaders.
- At 7:06 of the second period, Daniel Leavens ripped a slap-shot from the left circle that found room above sophomore goalie Paul Berrafato's (Williamsville, N.Y.) blocker side to make it 2-2.
- At 15:58 of the second period, Greg Gibson wristed a shot from the left circle which beat Berrafato high on the glove side to make it 3-2 Colonials.
- At 17:43 of the second period, freshman forward Michael Laffin (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) delivered a pass from behind the goal to Moore who sent a one-timer that found the top left hand corner of the net to tie the score at 3-3. Senior assistant captain Joe McNamara (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) also recorded an assist on the goal.
- The Crusaders outshot Robert Morris 13-10 in the second period, going 1-3 on the power play, while the Colonials went 1-2.
- At 12:18 of the third period, Timmy Moore ripped a wrist shot from the blue line that deflected off Denham and found the bottom of the net to make it 4-3 Robert Morris.
- At 17:13 of the third period, junior forward Mike Barrett (Orland Park, Ill.) sent a pass from the left circle to Moore in the slot, and his wrist shot found the top of the net on Shafer's blocker side to make it 4-4.
- With 41 seconds remaining in the third period, Freidmann sent wrister on goal from the slot, which found the back of the net to make it 5-4 Colonials.
- The Crusaders pulled the goaltender in the final seconds of the game, yet were unable to record the equalizer as the Colonials tallied the 5-4 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Holy Cross outshot Robert Morris 36-28 in the contest.
- Berrafato recorded 23 saves, while Shafer tallied 32 saves.
- Holy Cross went 2-6 on the power play, while Robert Morris went 2-5
- Holy Cross won 36 face-offs, while Robert Morris won 28.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Moore's two goals tonight propel him into the team lead with 12.
- Barrett's assist is his 20th point of the year, which is tied for the team lead with Moore.
