Field Hockey Edges UC Davis, 2-1

THE BASICS:
Score: Holy Cross 2, UC Davis 1
Records: Holy Cross (3-2); UC Davis (2-4)
Location: Worcester, Mass. (Hart Turf Field)
The Lead: Holy Cross freshman Emily Loprete (Watertown, Mass.) tallied the game-winning goal to help lead the Crusaders to a 2-1 victory over UC Davis in non-conference field hockey action on Thursday afternoon at the rainy Hart Turf Field. Holy Cross is now 3-2 on the season, which is its best start to a campaign since 2004.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Holy Cross gained the 1-0 lead in the sixth minute (5:32). Sophomore Maureen Connolly (New Canaan, Conn.) dribbled in to goal on a breakaway and passed the ball to the right side to freshman Lauren Ineson (Shrewsbury, Mass.) who converted to give the Crusaders the lead.
• UC Davis answered later in the first half, as Briana Sooy tipped in a pass from Kate Young in the 21st (20:47) minute to tie the game at 1-1.
• The Crusaders gained the 2-1 lead just under five minutes later (25:44), as Loprete scored from the right side off a pass by Connolly.
• The Aggies had multiple chances in the second half to tie the game, as they had four penalty corners and six shots on goal, but the Crusader back line and freshman goalkeeper Megan Inch (Perth, Scotland) stood tall to preserve the 2-1 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
• Inch made eight saves in picking up her third win of the season, while UC Davis netminder Erica Cohen made four stops.
• UC Davis held the statistical advantage in total shots (19-7), shots on goal (9-6) and penalty corners (9-2).
• Loprete led the Crusaders with three shots on goal, while Augustina Singh led all players with four shots on target.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
• The goal for Ineson was the first of her career.
• Loprete's marker was her team-best third of the season.
• Connolly now has four assists this year to lead the team.
• Holy Cross' 3-2 record to begin the season is its best start to a campaign since the 2004 squad began the year 4-1.
• It is also the first time since 2004 that Holy Cross has begun the year with a 3-0 home record.

UP NEXT:
• Holy Cross returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 13, when it travels to Fairfield for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
