Baseball Eliminated In PL Tournament Semifinals By Lehigh

THE BASICS:

  • Score: Lehigh 7, Holy Cross 1
  • Records: Lehigh (23-26); Holy Cross (24-26)
  • Pitching Decision: W: Stephens (4-5) | L: White (4-5)
  • Location: Bethlehem, Pa. (Legacy Park)
  • The Lead: Lehigh starting pitcher Nick Stephens pitched a complete game three hitter to help lift the No. 2 seeded Mountain Hawks to a 7-1 victory over No. 3 Holy Cross in the Patriot League Tournament semifinal series. The Crusaders have been eliminated from the Patriot League Tournament and finish the season with a 24-26 overall record.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Lehigh grabbed the early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, as Mike Garzillo brought home a pair on a two-run home run.
  • The Mountain Hawks added a score in both the third and fourth innings to gain the 5-0 advantage.
  • Lehigh added two more runs in the eighth inning on back-to-back solo home runs by Garzillo and John Elson to make the score 7-0.
  • Holy Cross tried to mount a rally in the top of the ninth inning. With two outs, junior Nick Lovullo (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) hit a single into the right-center gap and moved over to third on an error by the Lehigh center fielder. Senior Evan Ocello (Camarillo, Calif.) then plated Lovullo during the next at-bat on an infield single to make the score 7-1. Lehigh, however, forced a fly out to end the contest and clinch the victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Stephens improved his record to 4-5 in the nine-inning complete game. He allowed one run on three hits, while fanning seven and walking none.
  • Holy Cross sophomore starting pitcher Ben White (Holden, Mass.) was charged with the loss (4-5), as he allowed four runs on five hits in three innings of work.
  • Lehigh held the 9-3 advantage in total hits and hit four home runs in the contest.
