  • The Lead: Holy Cross sophomore Bill Schlich (Massapequa, N.Y.) batted 2-for-5 with a home run and five RBIs to help lead the Crusaders to a 10-1 triumph over Yale in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday evening at Fitton Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Holy Cross began its offensive onslaught in the bottom of the first inning. With two out and the bases loaded, sophomore Josh Hassell (Tulsa, Okla.) cashed in senior Evan Ocello (Camarillo, Calif.) and sophomore Anthony Critelli (Holmdel, N.J.) on a double down the right-field line. Schlich then made the score 4-0 on a single through the left side to plate Hassell and freshman Cam O'Neill (Lynn, Mass.).
  • The Crusaders tacked on another run in the bottom of the second, as senior Jack St. Clair (Newton, Mass.) drove in Ocello on an RBI-single to make the score 5-0.
  • After two scoreless frames, Holy Cross struck for three insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth to gain the 8-0 advantage. St. Clair led off the inning with a solo home run over the left-field fence, while Critelli and O'Neill both scored on sacrifice flies later in the frame.
  • The Crusaders scored their final two runs of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning, as Schlich launched a two-run home run over the left-field fence, scoring Hassell and giving Holy Cross the 10-0 lead.
  • Yale scored its only run of the contest in the top of the eighth, as Richard Slenker plated Alex Boos on a fielder's choice to make the score its final, 10-1.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Holy Cross sophomore Zach Fox (Los Gatos, Calif.) picked up his second win of the season (2-3), as he pitched three shutout innings and allowed two hits and one walk.
  • Crusader senior Collin Manning (Charlotte, N.C.) and sophomore George Capen (Gainesville, Va.) each tossed two innings apiece and did not allow a run. Capen also recorded four punchouts.
  • Yale starter Nate O'Leary was charged with the loss (0-1), as he allowed eight earned runs on nine hits in four innings of work.
  • Holy Cross held the 13-9 advantage in the hitting department and the 3-0 edge in extra-base hits.
  • St. Clair went 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs, while Hassell batted 3-for-4 with two runs, a double, a home run and a pair of RBIs. O'Neill and Ocello both with 2-for-4 with two runs scored apiece.  

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Holy Cross has now won four games in a row and nine of its last 11 contests. The Crusaders have also only allowed one run or less in nine of the last 11 games. 
  • In the 124th meeting between Holy Cross and Yale, the Crusaders are now 73-49-2 all-time in the series that dates back to 1895.
