The Midshipmen won the first contest, 1-0, in eight innings, while Holy Cross earned the 3-2 victory in the second game.

GAME 1
HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Both teams struggled to generate any offense, but the Holy Cross had a chance to break the tie in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, sophomore Alex Voitik (Shorewood, Ill.) singled through the left side and moved over to second two batters later after junior Nick Lovullo (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) was hit by a pitch. A wild pitch moved Voitik and Lovullo over to second and third, but Navy starter Luke Gillingham recorded a strikeout to end the frame.
  • The Mids broke the stalemate in the top of the eighth, as Brad Borosak drove in Robert Currie on a RBI-single to make the score 1-0. Gillingham forced three popouts in the bottom of the frame to clinch the win for Navy.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Gillingham picked up the win (5-1), as he tossed the complete-game shutout going eight strong with eight punchouts. He walked none and allowed five hits.
  • Holy Cross senior Donny Murray (Walpole, Mass.) was charged with the loss (1-2), as he allowed one earned run and five hits. Murray recorded six strikeouts and did not issue a free pass.
  • The Mids held the 6-5 edge in total hits, as both teams had one extra-base hit apiece.
  • Holy Cross sophomore Bill Schlich (Massapequa, N.Y.) led the Crusaders with a 2-for-3 performance at the dish.

GAME 2
HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Crusaders grabbed the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, as freshman Cam O'Neill (Lynn, Mass.) cashed in senior Evan Ocello (Camarillo, Calif.) on an RBI-single.
  • Holy Cross increased its advantage to 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth. Ocello plated the first run of the frame on an RBI-double, which scored Lovullo. Ocello scored during the next at bat off a senior Jack St. Clair (Newton, Mass.) single that was misplayed by the Navy centerfielder.
  • Navy posted only two hits over the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, but made the game interesting in the top of the ninth. Stephen Born led off the frame with a single and moved over to second on a walk by Ben McGrath. After two quick outs, Travis Blue drew a walk to load the bases. Currie then plated Born and McGrath on a two-RBI single down the right-field line to make it a 3-2 game. Crusader junior closer Sean Gustin (Stoneham, Mass.), however, struck out the final batter of the frame to secure the one-run triumph.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • White pitched well in picking up his third win of the season (3-3). He tossed eight innings and allowed only six hits and two walks, while striking out seven. Gustin earned his second save of the year with two punchouts.
  • Navy starter George Coughlin was charged with the loss (4-2), as he allowed three runs on five hits in 4-1/3 innings pitched.
  • Navy edged Holy Cross, 8-7, in the hitting department, as the Crusaders left 11 men on compared to nine for the Mids.
  • Ocello batted 2-for-4 in the game with two runs scored, a double and one RBI, while sophomore Josh Hassell (Tulsa, Okla.) also went 2-for-4 in the nightcap.

UP NEXT:

  • Holy Cross returns to action on Sunday, April 5, when it plays the third and fourth games of the weekend series with Navy at 1:00 p.m.
