Baseball Drops Doubleheader To Bucknell On Sunday

  • The Lead: Bucknell's Anthony Gingerelli combined to hit 4-for-7 with two runs scored, three doubles and three RBIs to help lead the visiting Bison to a doubleheader sweep over Holy Cross on Sunday afternoon at Fitton Field. Bucknell earned the 3-0 victory in game one and the 5-1 triumph in the second contest.

GAME 1
HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Bucknell broke open the game in the top of the first inning, as it scored three runs on four hits to gain the 3-0 advantage.
  • Holy Cross had a chance to cut into the deficit in the bottom of the fourth inning, as senior Jack St. Clair (Newton, Mass.) and freshman Cam O'Neill (Lynn, Mass.) both had singles, but the Crusaders could not convert on the opportunity.
  • The Crusaders managed only two hits over the final two frames, as the Bison held on for the 3-0 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Bucknell starting pitcher Andrew Andreychik picked up his fourth win of the year (4-5), as he allowed five hits and two walks in the complete-game shutout.
  • After allowing the three runs on four hits in the top of the first inning, Holy Cross sophomore starter Justin Finan (Barrington, R.I.) only surrendered one base runner for the final six innings he pitched. Over the seven innings, Finan recorded two strikeouts.
  • The Crusaders held the 5-4 edge in total hits, as sophomore Alex Voitik (Shorewood, Ill.) led the Crusaders with a 2-for-3 performance at the dish.

GAME 2
HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After two scoreless frames, the Crusaders struck for a run in the bottom of the third to grab the 1-0 lead. Voitik led off the inning with a double down the left-field line and scored two batters later on an RBI-single up the middle by senior Evan Ocello (Camarillo, Calif.) to put Holy Cross on the board.
  • Neither team scored over the next three innings, but Bucknell was able to grab the lead in the top of the seventh with three runs to go ahead 3-1.
  • The Bison added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the eighth to increase its lead to 5-1.
  • Holy Cross tried to rally in the bottom of the ninth, as it had two runners reach with no outs, but Bucknell closer Mike Stephens retired the next three Crusaders in order to secure the 5-1 triumph.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Bucknell starting pitcher Mike Castellani went eight-plus innings in picking up his fourth win of the season (4-1), as he allowed one run on seven hits, while striking out two. Stephens notched his third save of the campaign in setting down Holy Cross in order in the ninth.
  • Holy Cross sophomore starter Brendan King (Brookline, Mass.) was tabbed with his first loss of the season (3-1), as he surrendered five runs on eight hits in 7.2 innings of work.
  • Bucknell outhit Holy Cross, 9-7, in game two, as Ocello and Voitik both has two hits apiece for the Crusaders.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Holy Cross will enter the 2015 Patriot League Tournament as the No. 3 seed and travel to No. 2 Lehigh on Saturday and Sunday, May 9-10, for the semifinal round in the best two-out-of-three series. Game times will be announced at a later date.
  • With the three wins this weekend, Bucknell is now 55-45 against Holy Cross in the all-time series.

  • Holy Cross returns to action on Tuesday, April 28 for a 5:00 p.m. home contest against UMass at Fitton Field.
