GAME 1
HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Black Knights struck for two scores in the bottom of the first inning on a Mark McCants triple to gain the 2-0 advantage.
  • Army West Point added two more scores in the bottom of the third to increase its lead to 4-0. McCants drove in a run on his second triple of the game and scored later in the frame on an RBI-single by Alex Jensen.
  • Holy Cross put together a two-out rally to load the bases in the top of the fourth, but was unable to push any runs across in the inning.
  • In the top of the fifth, the Crusaders put together a rally to slice into the deficit. Sophomore Alex Voitik (Shorewood, Ill.) and junior Bobby Indeglia (North Kingstown, R.I.) began the inning with back-to-back singles. Junior Nick Lovullo (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) plated Voitik on an RBI-single through the left side to make the score 4-1. Indeglia scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly by senior Jack St. Clair (Newton, Mass.), as Lovullo crossed home during the next at bat on an RBI-double by Critelli to cut the margin to 4-3.
  • The Crusaders, however, only managed one hit over the final two frames, as Army West Point held on for the 4-3 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Robinett tossed the complete game in picking up his fifth win of the season (5-4). He allowed three runs on one walk and eight hits, while striking out seven batters.
  • Holy Cross senior starter Donny Murray (Walpole, Mass.) was charged with the loss (1-3), as he allowed four runs on six hits in six innings pitched. Murray fanned four batters and walked none.

  • Army tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth, but the Crusaders answered in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs, Critelli laced a single up the middle to plate Lovullo from third base and give Holy Cross the 2-1 edge. Lovullo began the frame with a base knock to ignite the rally.
  • Holy Cross added two insurance runs in the top of the eighth inning. With the bases loaded, Critelli drove in a pair on a double down the left-field line to put the Crusaders ahead 4-1.
