Women's Basketball Falls To Lehigh In Patriot League Quarterfinals

THE BASICS:

  • Score: Lehigh 75, Holy Cross 62

  • The Lead: Holy Cross women's basketball junior forward Raquel Scott (Ridgewood, N.J.) notched a double-double with game-highs of 20 points and 14 rebounds, but the Crusaders were defeated by Lehigh, 75-62, in the Patriot League Tournament quarterfinals on Friday evening at the Hart Center.

TURNING POINT:

  • Holy Cross trailed Lehigh by eight points (14-6) at the 12:42-mark of the first half, before the Mountain Hawks closed the half on a 26-10 rally earn the 40-16 lead at intermission. The Crusaders never got closer than seven points for the remainder of the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After a back-and-forth opening five minutes, Lehigh grabbed the early 14-4 lead (14:15). Holy Cross cut the margin to eight points (14-6) with 12:42 on the clock, but a 12-3 spurt by the Mountain Hawks made the score 26-9 (6:26).
  • Lehigh worked the advantage to 26 points (40-14) with 1:05 on the clock, before a Holy Cross bucket to end the half made the score 40-16.
  • The Mountain Hawks gained their largest lead of the game (52-24) at the 14:43-mark of the second half, but the Crusaders would begin to slowly chip into the deficit. Holy Cross went on a 13-4 rally to cut the margin to 56-37 on the back of a Scott layup (10:29).
  • The Crusaders edged their way back into the game with a 21-11 spurt to slice the deficit to single-digits (67-58) with 4:10 on the clock. A pair of free throws by junior center Molly Hourigan (Memphis, N.Y.) made the score 67-60 at the 2:27-mark, but Lehigh converted a layup on the other end to go back up by nine (69-60).
  • Scott scored on a layup with 1:52 left in the contest to cut it back to seven points (69-62), but that would end up being the final points for Holy Cross. The Mountain Hawks hit 6-of-8 free throws over the final minutes to clinch the 75-62 victory.

INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS:

  • In addition to Scott for Holy Cross, senior forward Emily Parker (Johnston, Iowa) totaled 10 points and five rebounds, while junior guard Lisa Mifsud (Erie, Pa.) posted 10 points, four rebounds and four assists.
  • Junior guard Kate Gillespie (Washington, D.C.) chipped in with seven points, while Hourigan hauled in seven rebounds.
  • Lehigh had five players record double-digit points in Kerry Kinek (17), Sarah Williams (13), Qunici Mann (12), Lexi Martins (11) and Katie O'Reilly (10).

TEAM STATISTICS:

  • Lehigh shot an impressive 49.1 percent from the field (27-55), while Holy Cross hit on 23-of-65 from the floor (35.4%). The Crusaders only hit 22.6 percent of their shots in the first half (7-31).
  • The Mountain Hawks canned 36.4 percent from downtown (4-11), while Holy Cross was limited to 17.6 percent from behind the arc (3-17).
  • The Crusaders drilled 13-of-16 from the free-throw line (81.3%), while Lehigh connected on 17-of-28 from the charity stripe (60.7%).
  • The Mountain Hawks held the statistical edge in points in the paint (42-36) and second-chance points (11-10), while the Crusaders led in rebounding (42-36) and points off turnovers (15-14).

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Parker scored her 900th career point in the contest. She finishes her career with 907 points, 586 rebounds, 119 blocked shots and 65 assists. Her blocks total ranks sixth all-time in program history.
  • Freshman guard Katie Doherty (Holbrook, N.Y.) hauled in her 100th rebound and finished her rookie season with 102 caroms.
  • Scott moves into 21st place on the Holy Cross all-time scoring list with 1,125 career points scored. She also recorded 285 rebounds this year, which are the sixth-most in the single-season record book. The double-double for Scott was her 13th of the season and the 32nd of her career.
  • Holy Cross is now 40-20 all-time in games against Lehigh and 8-2 in Patriot League Tournament games versus the Mountain Hawks.
