THE BASICS:

  • Score: Gardner-Webb 5, Holy Cross 4
  • Records: Gardner-Webb (10-1); Holy Cross (1-9)
  • Pitching Decision: W: Andrew Massey (1-0) | L: Collin Manning (0-2)

  • The Lead: Gardner-Webb's Henry Rundio scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning on a wild pitch to lift the Runnin' Bulldogs to the 5-4 victory over Holy Cross in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After a scoreless first inning, Gardner-Webb pushed across a run in the bottom of the second to gain the 1-0 lead on an RBI-single by Patrick Graham.
  • The Bulldogs held the one-run lead until the top of the sixth inning. Junior Bobby Indeglia (North Kingstown, R.I.) and senior Evan Ocello (Camarillo, Calif.) hit back-to-back singles to lead off the frame. Two batters later, senior Jack St. Clair (Newton, Mass.) walked to load the bases. Sophomore Anthony Critelli (Holmdel, N.J.) drew a walk to bring in Indeglia and tie the game at 1-1. Gardner-Webb, however, retired the next two Crusaders to keep the game tied.
  • The Bulldogs broke the stalemate in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of runs to gain the 3-1 lead.
  • Holy Cross rallied in the top of the ninth to gain the 4-3 lead. With one out, sophomore Josh Hassell (Tulsa, Okla.) walked and scored during the next at-bat on a freshman Cam O'Neill (Lynn, Mass.) home run to tie the game at 3-3. Sophomore Bill Schlich (Massapequa, N.Y.) kept the inning going with a triple and scored on a squeeze bunt by Indeglia to give Holy Cross the one-run lead.
  • Gardner-Webb, however, put together a rally to claim the walk-off win over Holy Cross. With the bases loaded, a passed ball scored the tying run, while a wild pitch clinched the victory for the Bulldogs.
