  • The Lead: Holy Cross senior starting pitcher Donny Murray (Walpole, Mass.) tossed six shutout innings in game one to help lead the Crusaders to a 6-0 victory over St. John's during Sunday's doubleheader at Golden Lions Field. The Red Storm picked up the 5-2 win over Holy Cross in game two. Holy Cross freshman Cam O'Neill (Lynn, Mass.) batted .500 on the afternoon with a double and two RBIs.

GAME 1
HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After a scoreless first inning, Holy Cross scored twice in the top of the second inning to gain the 2-0 lead, as sophomore Alex Voitik (Shorewood, Ill.) cashed in both O'Neill and senior Jack St. Clair (Newton, Mass.) on a single into right field.
  • The Crusaders increased their lead in the top of the third inning, as sophomore Anthony Critelli (Holmdel, N.J.) plated senior Evan Ocello (Camarillo, Calif.) and junior Nick Lovullo (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) on a double to make the score 4-0.
  • Holy Cross scored the game's final two runs in the top of the ninth. Junior Bobby Indeglia (North Kingstown, R.I.) crossed home on an error for the first run of the frame, as Ocello plated Lovullo on an RBI-single to make the score its final, 6-0.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Murray walked none and struck out four batters in his six innings of work, as he allowed five hits in the win (1-1).
  • Holy Cross sophomore reliever Justin Finan (Barrington, R.I.) picked up his first career save, as he pitched three shutout innings with a pair of strikeouts.
  • St. John's starter Cody Stashak was charged with the loss (2-3), as he surrendered four runs on six hits in five innings of work.
  • Holy Cross held the 10-8 advantage in total hits. O'Neill batted 3-for-3 with two RBIs, while Lovullo went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and two stolen bases.

GAME 2
HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Red Storm grabbed the early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a two-RBI single by Matt Harris.
  • Holy Cross answered in the top of the third inning. Junior Shane Sandoval (Westerly, R.I.) led off the frame with a double down the left-field line and scored two batters later on an RBI-single by sophomore Josh Hassell (Tulsa, Okla.) Hassell crossed home later in the inning to tie the game at 2-2 on a sacrifice fly by Ocello.
  • St. John's broke the stalemate in the bottom of the fourth with a score to gain the 3-2 lead. The Red Storm added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh to make the score its final, 5-2.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • St. John's starter Ryan McCormick earned the win (2-1), as he allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits in 5.1 innings pitched.
  • Holy Cross sophomore starter Ben White (Holden, Mass.) was charged with the loss (1-3), as he allowed three runs and three hits in 4.2 innings.
  • St. John's held the 7-6 edge in total hits. Sandoval was the only Crusaders with multiple hits, as he batted 2-for-4 with a run scored.

 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Ocello had a hit in each game and extended his hitting and on-base streaks to 15 games.
  • Holy Cross' victory in game one snapped an eight-game losing streak against St. John's. The Crusaders last defeated the Red Storm in the Northeast Regional of the NCAA Tournament on May 25, 1978.

UP NEXT:

  • Holy Cross returns to action on Tuesday, March 17, when it hosts Boston College at 5:00 p.m. in its home opener at Fitton Field.
