Crusaders End Regular Season With 76-62 Win Over Boston U.

THE BASICS:

  • Score: Holy Cross 76, Boston University 62 
  • Records: Holy Cross (15-16, 11-7 PL); Boston University (5-24, 2-16 PL)

  • The Lead: Holy Cross senior forward Emily Parker (Johnston, Iowa) scored a team and season-high 18 points on 6-of-7 shooting with six rebounds to help lead the Crusaders to the 76-62 victory over Boston University in Patriot League women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at the Hart Center. With the win, Holy Cross secures the No. 3 seed in the 2015 Patriot League Tournament and will host a quarterfinal round game on Friday, March 6.

TURNING POINT:

  • With the score knotted at 20-20 at the 10:27-mark of the first half, the Crusaders embarked on a 10-0 surge to gain the 30-20 lead (7:12). Boston University would get no closer than eight points for the remainder of the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The two teams traded possessions over the first 10 minutes of the opening stanza, as the score was tied at 20-20 with 10:27 on the clock. The Crusaders, however, opened the game up with 10 straight points, including six coming from junior guard Lisa Mifsud (Erie, Pa.) to give Holy Cross the 30-20 advantage (7:12).
  • Boston University cut the margin to eight points (30-22) on the next possession, but a 10-4 spurt by Holy Cross to close out the half gave it the 40-26 lead at intermission. Parker and junior guard Infiniti Thomas-Waheed (Newton, Mass.) scored four points each for Holy Cross during the rally.
  • The Crusaders increased their lead to 51-28, thanks to an 11-2 surge to start the second half (17:28). Freshman guard Katie Doherty (Holbrook, N.Y.) scored five points in the second-half stretch, while Parker totaled four.
  • Holy Cross pushed its lead to 24 points (61-37) – its largest of the contest – with 11:15 on the clock, before the Terriers started to work themselves back into the game.
  • Boston University used a 25-9 rally to make it an eight-point game (70-62) with 1:54 left in regulation. The Terriers forced seven Holy Cross turnovers during the run to cut the deficit to single digits.
  • Holy Cross, however, went 6-of-8 from the free-throw line over the final 1:10 to preserve the victory over Boston University, 76-62.  

INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS:

  • In addition to Parker for Holy Cross, Doherty totaled 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting to go with three rebounds, while Mifsud scored 13 points.
  • Thomas-Waheed recorded eight points, six rebounds and three steals, while junior forward Raquel Scott (Ridgewood, N.J.) filled the stat sheet with seven points, seven rebounds, a career-high nine assists and four steals.
  • Boston University was led by Troi Melton, who scored a game-high 20 points. Mollie McKendrick tallied 15 points and eight rebounds, while Courtney Latham totaled 10 points, nine assists and eight rebounds.

TEAM STATISTICS:

  • Holy Cross connected on 44.3 percent of its shots from the field (27-61), while Boston University hit 43.3 percent from the floor (26-60).
  • The Crusaders canned 6-of-17 from downtown (35.3%), while the Terriers sank 2-of-11 from long range (18.2%).
  • Both teams shot 61.5 percent from the free-throw line, as Holy Cross hit 16-of-26 and Boston University connected on 8-of-13.
  • Holy Cross held the statistical edge in total rebounds (39-36), assists (21-18), points in the paint (38-32) and steals (13-7).

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • With the win, Holy Cross earns the season sweep over Boston University and is 12-3 all-time against the Terriers.
  • Holy Cross is currently riding a four-game winning streak.
  • The Crusaders finish the Patriot League regular season with 11 victories, their most since the 2004-2005 team had 12 wins.
  • The No. 3 seed in the upcoming Patriot League Tournament is Holy Cross' highest seeding since it was No. 2 in 2007-2008
  • Doherty scored her 200th collegiate point during the contest and has 204 in her career.
  • Parker's 18 points are her most this season and the most since her career-high of 23 points at Colgate on Jan. 8, 2014.
  • Scott passes former teammate Brisje Malone for 22nd place on the Holy Cross all-time scoring list with 1,105 career points.

SENIOR DAY:

  • Before the game, Parker and fellow classmate Clare Sullivan (Belmont, Mass.) were honored on "Senior Day" for their commitment to the women's basketball program over the past four seasons.
