GAME 1
HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Richmond struck first in the bottom of the first on an RBI-single by Matt Dacey to plate Michael Morman to put the Spiders ahead 1-0.
  • After a scoreless second and third innings, the Crusaders knotted the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth. Senior Evan Ocello (Camarillo, Calif.) led off the inning with a single up the middle and moved over to second base on a Lovullo walk. Senior Jack St. Clair (Newton, Mass.) then hit an infield single to load the bases. Ocello scored during the next at-bat on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Anthony Critelli (Holmdel, N.J.) to tie the game.
  • Both teams combined for five hits over the next five innings before Holy Cross broke the stalemate in the top of the 10th. Freshman Cam O'Neill (Lynn, Mass.) singled to begin the frame. Two batters later after sophomore Jamie Cooper (McLean, Va.) came in to pinch run for O'Neill, Ocello singled through the left side to put runners on first and second. Lovullo then drove in Cooper on an RBI-single to put Holy Cross ahead, 2-1. St. Clair singled into left field to plate Ocello and make the score its final, 3-1.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Holy Cross sophomore reliever George Capen (Gainesville, Va.) picked up the win (1-0), after he tossed 3.1 scoreless frames and allowed one hit, while striking out a pair. Senior starting pitcher Donny Murray (Walpole, Mass.) pitched well in the no decision. Murray went 6.2 innings and allowed one run on four hits, while fanning four and walking none.
  • Richmond reliever Dan Martinson was charged with the loss (0-1), as he surrendered two runs on five hits in three innings pitched.
  • St. Clair batted 3-for-4 with one RBI, while Ocello, Lovullo and O'Neill had two hits apiece. Holy Cross held the 9-5 advantage in total hits

GAME 2
HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Richmond opened its offensive early in the second game with four runs in the opening frame. Dacey plated one on an RBI-double and scored later in the inning on a balk. Jansen Fraser also drove in Tyler Beckwith on a groundout, while Kurtis Brown scored the final run of the frame on an RBI-double by Aaron Newman.
  • Holy Cross managed four hits over the six innings, before it scored in the top of the eighth. Junior Bobby Indeglia (North Kingstown, R.I.) doubled to lead off the frame and moved over to third during the next at bat on a groundout. Lovullo then drove in Indeglia on a groundout to make the score 4-1.
  • The Crusaders threatened in the top of the ninth inning, as sophomore Bill Schlich (Massapequa, N.Y.) and O'Neill hit back-to-back singles with two outs in the frame. They both moved to third and second, respectively, on a wild pitch, but Richmond closer Joey Vecchione struck out the final batter to preserve the victory.
