  • Records: Richmond (1-2); Holy Cross (0-4)
  • Pitching Decision: W: Ryan Cook (1-1) | L: Justin Finan (0-1) | S: James Lively (1)
  • Location: Allendale, S.C. (University of South Carolina-Salkehatchie Field)
  • The Lead: Richmond's Doug Kraeger batted 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBIs to help lead the Spiders to a 14-7 victory over Holy Cross in non-conference baseball action on Friday afternoon at the University of South Carolina-Salkehatchie Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After two and a half scoreless frames, the Spiders put up a crooked number in the bottom of the third inning. Matt Dacey led off the inning with a walk and moved over to third on a double by Kraeger. Dacey then scored on wild pitch to put Richmond on top, 1-0. Kraeger scored later in the frame to give the Spiders the 2-0 advantage.
  • Richmond added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to go ahead, 4-0. Tyler Beckwith got the inning started with a solo home run over the left field wall. Kraeger scored later in the frame on an RBI-double by Kurtis Brown.
  • Holy Cross put together a rally in the top of the sixth inning, as senior Evan Ocello (Camarillo, Calif.) led off the frame with a solo home run to make the score 4-1. The Crusaders loaded the bases later in the inning, and freshman Dan Vucovich (Lititz, Pa.) drove in both senior Jack St. Clair (Newton, Mass.) and Anthony Critelli (Holmdel, N.J.) on a single to slice the margin to 4-3.
  • The Spiders, however, pushed across five runs in the bottom of the sixth and five more in the seventh to gain the 14-3 advantage. Michael Morman launched a three-run home run in the bottom half of the seventh inning for Richmond.
  • Holy Cross cut into the deficit in the top of the eighth inning. With two outs, sophomore Bill Schlich (Massapequa, N.Y.), Vucovich and freshman Cam O'Neill (Lynn, Mass.) hit back-to-back-to-back singles to load the bases. Sophomore Josh Hassell (Tulsa, Okla.) then plated Schlich and Vucovich on a double down the left-field line to make the score 14-5.
  • The Crusaders tried to mount a comeback in the top of the ninth inning. With one out, freshman Marco Burgarello (Glendale, Ariz.) got the inning started with a single into left field, his first collegiate hit. Critelli moved him over to third on a double down the left-field line, and both came around to score during the next at-bat on a base knock by sophomore Alex Voitik (Shorewood, Ill.). Richmond, however, retired the next two Crusaders in order to earn the 14-7 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Richmond starter Ryan Cook picked up the win (1-1), as he tossed 5.1 innings and allowed three runs on five hits, while striking out three. Spider reliever James Lively earned the save (1), as he closed out the final three innings.
  • Holy Cross sophomore starting pitcher Justin Finan (Barrington, R.I.) was charged with the loss (0-1), as he surrendered two runs on three hits in four innings of work.
  • The Spiders held the 17-13 edge in the hitting department.
  • Holy Cross had multi-hit games from Critelli, O'Neill, St. Clair and Vucovich, as all three had two hits apiece.
