Location: Sullivan Arena (Manchester, N.H.)
Time: 1:00 p.m.
The Lead: Freshman Lauren Abbenante (Cranston, R.I.) netted two goals as classmate Kara Violette (Biddeford, Maine) scored the game winning goal as Holy Cross stunned St. Anselm in a 4-3 overtime victory at Sullivan Arena in ECAC East women's hockey action on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Coming off a 5-0 victory over UMass-Boston the previous night, the Crusaders knew they had to carry over their momentum when facing a team like St. Anselm.
  • Holy Cross' momentum proved to be evident as it jumped out to an early 1-0 lead six minutes (5:16) into the game as Abbenante was able to slip the puck past St. Anselm goalie Lindsey Brown with the assist credited to senior Mary Klimasewiski (Conchester, Conn.).
  • As the first period was coming to a close, St. Anselm struck with a little over a minute remaining on a goal by Sarah Geisinger (18:52) and the assists credited to Tiffany Herron and Meaghan Spurling. The clock struck zero and both teams entered the locker room with the score tied at 1-1.
  • The Crusaders and Hawks entered the second period with the game tied at 1-1, but the Hawks would soon increase their lead to two as they found the back of the net twice during the stanza.
  • Alex Kazmer got the puck past senior goalie Alexandra Stevenson (Norwood, N.Y.) seven minutes in for her sixth goal of the year and gave the Hawks their first lead of the game at 2-1 (7:09). The assists were credited to Halle Kent and Martha Findley.
  • After a too many players on the ice penalty was called on Holy Cross, St. Anselm found themselves with the man advantage and saw it as an opportunity to increase their lead. Just one minute into the power-play, Alison Quinn connected for her 13th goal of the season and the Hawks found themselves up 3-1 (16:37) with four minutes remaining in the period.
  • However, Holy Cross would not go quietly as Abbenante's unassisted goal, her second of the game, cut the lead to one with 36 seconds remaining in the period as the stanza ended with the score at 3-2.
  • Using their speed and agility, the Crusaders put pressure on the Hawks as they were able to even the game at 3-3 (12:11) on a goal by senior Nicole Giannino (Bay Shore, N.Y) and assisted by sophomore Isabela Bagi (Brandford, Conn.)
  • The goal caused Brown to be pulled from the game as Hannah Synnott entered in relief for St. Anselm with eight minutes remaining in regulation. Synnott and Stevenson were able to hold the game at 3-3 as the contest entered overtime.
  • Quinn committed a hooking penalty for the Hawks and gave the Crusaders one last opportunity to put the game away. 19 seconds later, Violette did just that. With the help of Klimasewiski and junior Mackenzie Boardman (Anchorage, Alaska), Violette's 11th goal of the year snuck past Synnott and sealed the 4-3 Crusader overtime victory.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

  • Stevenson had 21 saves for the Crusaders, while Brown and Synnott combined for a total of 11 saves for the Hawks.
  • St. Anselm outshot Holy Cross (24-15) and held the advantage in the face-off circle (27-24)
  • Holy Cross went 1 for 3 in power-play opportunities as St. Anselm went 1 for 2.
