Women's Basketball Falls Late To Army, 53-51

THE BASICS:

  • Score: Army 53, Holy Cross 51 
  • Records: Army (18-5, 10-3 PL); Holy Cross (11-15, 7-6 PL) 
  • Location: Worcester, Mass. (Hart Recreation Center)
  • The Lead: Army junior guard Kelsey Minato posted game-highs of 19 points and seven rebounds to help lead the visiting Black Knights to a 53-51 triumph over Holy Cross in Patriot League women's basketball action on Wednesday evening at the Hart Center.

TURNING POINT:

  • The Crusaders held the 42-39 lead with 11:38 left in the second half, but Army went on an 11-4 spurt to gain the 50-46 advantage at the 2:31-mark of the second half. Minato scored seven of the 11 points for the Black Knights during the stretch, as Holy Cross would not be able to retake the lead for the remainder of the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Holy Cross erupted out of the gate and took the 10-0 lead at the 17:33-mark of the first half. The Crusaders worked the margin to 11 points (18-7) with 13:46 on the clock, but the Black Knights countered with a 16-7 run to slice the deficit to 25-23 (5:10). The two teams would trade buckets over the final five-plus minutes of the first half, as Holy Cross went into the locker room with the 33-31 advantage.
  • Army took its first lead of the game with a three-pointer by Daizjah Morris to start the second half and grab the 34-33 edge (19:27). Both squads went back-and forth over the next 7:49, as Holy Cross would go ahead by three points (42-39) on the back of a freshman guard Infiniti Thomas-Waheed (Newton, Mass.) jumper with 11:38 on the clock.
  • Army, however, embarked on an 11-4 surge to gain the 50-46 lead with 2:31 left in the second half. Minato tallied seven points during the run for the Black Knights.
  • The Crusaders answered with a three-pointer by junior guard Lisa Mifsud (Erie, Pa.) to make it a one-point game (50-49) with 1:19 on the clock, but a Minato three-pointer with 53 ticks left put the visitors back up by four (53-49).
  • Holy Cross junior center Molly Hourigan (Memphis, N.Y.) scored off an offensive rebound with 30 seconds left, but the Crusaders would not get any closer as Army held on for the 53-51 victory.

INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Holy Cross was led by junior forward Raquel Scott (Ridgewood, N.J.) who tallied a team-high 16 points to go along with four rebounds.
  • Mifsud posted 12 points, while Hourigan hauled in a team-best five rebounds. Thomas-Waheed recorded seven points and a game-high six assists.
  • In addition to Minato for Army, Olivia Schretzman recorded 10 points, six rebounds and two blocked shots.

TEAM STATISTICS:

  • Holy Cross shot well from the field, as it connected on 42.6 percent from the floor (20-47) and 33.3 percent from behind the arc (4-12). The Crusaders limited the Black Knights to 36.4 percent shooting (20-55), including a 29.0 percent clip in the second half (9-31).
  • Army held the statistical edge in total rebounds (34-31), steals (7-3) and second-chance points (12-6), while Holy Cross led in assists (13-10) and points in the paint (28-22).

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • With the win, Army earns the regular-season sweep over Holy Cross, as the Black Knights defeated the Crusaders on Jan. 14 by a score of 67-53.
  • The Crusaders are now 34-24 all-time in games played against Army and 16-14 in contests played at the Hart Center. The Black Knights are on a three-game winning streak against the Crusaders.
  • Thomas-Waheed recorded a career-high six assists.
