Women?s Basketball Falls To Dartmouth, 60-54

THE BASICS:

  • The Lead: Dartmouth's Lakin Roland totaled a game-high 24 points on 10-of-14 shooting to help lead the visiting Big Green to a 60-54 victory over Holy Cross in non-conference women's basketball action on Wednesday morning at the Hart Center.

GET FIT WITH THE CRUSADERS

  • The contest was the fifth annual “Get Fit with the Crusaders Game” presented by Fallon Health, as over 2,800 Worcester Public School students cheered on the Crusaders, and learned about fitness and eating healthy.
  • The official attendance of 3,225 was the most for a Holy Cross women's basketball home game since the all-time record of 4,000 was set on Feb. 11, 2006 versus Bucknell. It is also the highest attendance in the five-year history of the “Get Fit Game.”

TURNING POINT:

  • With the game tied (35-35) with 6:45 left in the third quarter, Dartmouth used a 14-2 run to gain a 49-37 lead at the 9:04-mark of the fourth stanza. Holy Cross cut the deficit to two points later in the fourth quarter, but was unable to get any closer for the remainder of the contest.

HOLY CROSS HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Holy Cross was led by senior guard Lisa Mifsud (Erie, Pa.) and sophomore guard Infiniti Thomas-Waheed (Newton, Mass.). Mifsud totaled 12 points (4-7 3PM) and a team-high five assists, while Thomas-Waheed also scored 12 points and chipped in with four steals and three rebounds.
  • Crusaders senior center Molly Hourigan (Memphis, N.Y.) recorded 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds, while junior forward Madelyn Ganser (Needham, Mass.) posted career-highs of 11 points and four assists.

FIRST HALF:

  • Holy Cross jumped out with an 11-4 lead just 3:38 into the first quarter on a layup by Ganser. Dartmouth, however, countered with a 14-0 surge to gain an 18-11 advantage with 1:34 on the clock.
  • The Big Green went ahead by nine points (22-13) with 23 ticks left in the first, but a three-pointer by Mifsud on the Crusaders' final possession made the score 22-16 after one quarter of play.
  • Thomas-Waheed drilled a three-pointer on the first possession of the second quarter to cut the margin to three points (22-19), but the Big Green scored five quick points to gain the 27-19 advantage (7:15).
  • Holy Cross ended the Dartmouth rally and went on a 10-2 surge over the 6:48 to tie the game at 29-29 with 1:33 on the clock.
  • The Big Green held the 31-29 lead with four seconds left in the half, but Thomas-Waheed poked the ball loose and converted a layup as time expired to make the score 31-31 at the intermission.
  • Both teams shot the ball well in the opening half, as Dartmouth shot 58.3 from the field (14-24) and Holy Cross connected on 48.0 percent from the floor (12-25). The Crusaders also hit on 5-of-10 from behind the arc (50.0%).

SECOND HALF:

  • The teams traded baskets over the first three-plus minutes of the third quarter with the score tied at 35-35. Dartmouth, however, erupted on an 11-2 rally to close the period and gained a 46-37 lead after three quarters of play.
  • The Big Green hit a three-pointer to begin the fourth quarter and grab its largest lead of the game (49-37) with 9:04 on the clock. Holy Cross would battle back and go on a 14-2 surge to cut the deficit to two points (53-51) with 2:36 left in regulation.
  • Dartmouth hit a key bucket on the next possession to go ahead by four points (55-51) with just over two minutes left, as the Crusaders would not get any closer than four points for the remainder of the contest.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Dartmouth hit on 46.2 percent of its shots from the field (24-52), while the Crusaders drained 44.9 percent from the floor (22-49). The Big Green canned 5-of-12 from behind the arc (41.7%), while Holy Cross connected on 7-of-20 from downtown (35.0%). Dartmouth hit 7-of-8 from the free-throw line (87.5%), while the Crusaders only hit 42.9 percent of their shots from the charity stripe (3-7).
  • The Big Green held the statistical edge in total rebounds (36-22), offensive rebounds (10-4), points off turnovers (20-16) and second-chance points (12-4). The Crusaders led in assists (16-13), points in the paint (26-16) and fast-break points (8-0).

NEWS & NOTES:

  • Hourigan hauled in her 500th career rebound during the contest and now has 508 caroms as a Crusader. She also had one block in the game and now stands alone in second place in Holy Cross history with 202 career blocked shots.
  • Mifsud moved into a tie for eighth place in Holy Cross history with 122 career three-pointers made.
  • Holy Cross is now 4-1 in “Get Fit Games” and 8-5 all-time against Dartmouth.

  • Holy Cross will break for nine days before it opens up the Patriot League regular season at Boston University on Wednesday, Dec. 30 at 2:00 p.m.
