Holy Cross Suffers 60-51 Setback At Boston College

  • The Lead: Holy Cross sophomore guard Katie Doherty (Holbrook, N.Y.) scored a team-high 13 points, but the Crusaders were defeated by Boston College, 60-51, in non-conference women's basketball action on Wednesday evening at Conte Forum.

TURNING POINT:

  • Holy Cross gained the 33-32 lead at the 4:46-mark of the third quarter, but the Eagles ended the stanza on a 10-3 rally to gain the 42-36 advantage. The Crusaders would get no closer than six points for the remainder of the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Holy Cross jumped out to the 8-4 lead at the 5:16-mark of the first quarter on the back of a jumper by sophomore guard Tricia Byrne (Dunmore, Pa.). Boston College, however, responded with a 9-3 rally to grab the 13-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.
  • The Eagles pushed the lead to six points (18-12) at the 8:22-mark of the second quarter, but the Crusaders answered with an 8-2 spurt to tie the game at 20-20 (4:07) on the back of a Doherty three-pointer.
  • Boston College ended the first half on a 6-2 run to head into the locker room with the 26-22 advantage.
  • The Eagles worked the lead to six points (31-25) at the 6:32-mark of the third quarter, but the Crusaders countered with a 7-1 surge to gain the 33-32 advantage (4:46). Boston College, however, ended the quarter on a 10-3 rally to gain the 42-36 lead.
  • Boston College jumped out to a 15-point lead (54-39) just over three minutes into the fourth quarter (6:57), but the Crusaders slowly chipped away at the deficit. Over the next 3:40, Holy Cross embarked on an 11-2 rally – with Doherty chipping in six points – to cut the margin to 56-50 with 3:16 on the clock.
  • The Eagles would stop the Holy Cross surge two possessions later and outscored the Crusaders 4-1 over the closing minutes to earn the 60-51 victory.

INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS:

  • In addition to Doherty for Holy Cross, sophomore Infiniti Thomas-Waheed (Newton, Mass.) totaled 12 points, four rebounds and a pair of assists.
  • Byrne posted 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds, while junior forward Madelyn Ganser (Needham, Mass.) added 10 points and five caroms.
  • Senior center Molly Hourigan (Memphis, N.Y.) recorded six points, six rebounds and three steals.
  • Boston College was led by Kelly Hughes, who scored a game-high 17 points.

TEAM STATISTICS

  • Holy Cross shot 36.2 percent from the field (17-47), while the Eagles connected on 20-of-54 from the floor (37.0%).
  • From downtown, Boston College hit on 36.8 percent of its attempts (7-19), while the Crusaders canned 31.6 percent (6-19).
  • The Eagles converted 13 of 16 from the charity stripe (81.3%), while Holy Cross only hit 55.0 percent from the free-throw line (11-20).
  • Boston College held the statistical edge in total rebounds (39-32), assists (16-9) and points in the paint (12-8).

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Byrne and Ganser both set career-highs in points scored, total rebounds and minutes played.
