• The Lead: Cornell's Krysten Mayers tallied a pair of goals to help lead the Big Red to a 5-1 victory over Holy Cross in non-conference field hockey action on Sunday afternoon at the Hart Turf Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• Cornell broke the stalemate in the second minute (1:34), as Katie Garrity tipped in a shot from Katy Weeks to put the Big Red ahead 1-0.
• The visitors added their second goal of the game in the 14th minute (13:42), when Mayers tipped in a ball from the left side off a pass from Katie Carlson.
• Cornell went ahead 3-0 in the 19th minute (18:14), as Marisa Siergiej scored on a penalty corner with assists coming from Taylor Standiford and Weeks.
• Holy Cross scored its lone goal of the game in the 31st minute (30:35). After senior Katy Cronin (Franklin, Mass.) put a shot on goal, junior Gabriella Smith (Mendham, N.J.) cleaned up the rebound in from of the cage to make the score 3-1.
• Cornell, however, added a pair of second half goals from Mayers and Carlson to make the score its final, 5-1.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

• Holy Cross freshman goalkeeper Megan Inch (Perth, Scotland) made seven saves for the hosts, while Kelly Johnson made one save for Cornell.
• The Big Red held statistical advantages in total shots (17-3), shots on goal (13-2) and penalty corners (7-2).

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

• The goal for Smith was her first of the season and the second of her career.

UP NEXT:

• Holy Cross returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 14, when it travels to Providence, R.I. to take on Brown at 4:00 p.m.
