Women's Basketball Edges Bucknell, 53-52

THE BASICS:

  • Score: Holy Cross 53, Bucknell 52 
  • Records: Holy Cross (6-11, 2-2 PL); Bucknell (10-5, 2-2 PL)

  • The Lead: Holy Cross junior forward Raquel Scott (Ridgewood, N.J.) recorded her eighth double-double of the season with team-highs of 18 points and 10 rebounds to help lead the Crusaders to a 53-52 victory over Bucknell in Patriot League women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Sojka Pavilion.

TURNING POINT:

  • Holy Cross jumped out with the 11-2 lead at the 15:47 mark of the first half to gain the largest lead of the game. Scott scored six points during the early spurt to give the Crusaders the edge right from the beginning of the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Holy Cross jumped out with the early 11-2 lead on the back of a freshman guard Katie Doherty (Holbrook, N.Y.) three-pointer at the 15:47-mark of the first half. Bucknell, however, responded with a 16-5 surge to gain the 18-16 advantage with 9:19 on the clock.
  • The lead exchanged hands three times over the next seven-plus minutes, as Bucknell held the 27-25 lead with 2:14 left in the first half. Holy Cross finished the stanza strong, as it outscored the Bison, 5-2, to head into the locker room with the 30-29 edge.
  • Bucknell used a 6-2 spurt to begin the second half and gain the 35-32 lead (16:49). Holy Cross countered with a 9-2 rally to go ahead by four points (41-37) on the back of a junior guard Kate Gillespie (Washington, D.C.) three-pointer (11:53).
  • The Crusaders pushed the margin to six points (46-40) after freshman guard Infiniti Thomas-Waheed (Newton, Mass.) hit three free throws midway through the second half. The Bison whittled the deficit to 51-50 with 4:17 on the clock, but Doherty converted a layup to give the Crusaders the 53-50 lead with 3:35 left in regulation.
  • Bucknell scored on the next possession to makes the score 53-32, as both teams would not score for the remainder of the contest.
  • Bucknell took over possession with 34 ticks on the clock and committed a traveling violation with 12 seconds left in the game. The Bison forced a Holy Cross turnover on the inbounds pass and had one final chance to win the game. The Crusader defense, however, stood tall over the final nine seconds and helped Holy Cross clinch the 53-52 victory.

INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS:

  • In addition to the double-double for Scott, she also recorded a team-high five assists and a pair of blocked shots.
  • Thomas-Waheed posted 15 points, while Doherty scored eight points. Junior center Molly Hourigan (Memphis, N.Y.) registered six points and four blocked shots.
  • Bucknell was led by Audrey Dotson who had 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Sheaira Jones scored 10 points.

TEAM STATISTICS:

  • The Crusaders shot 35.8 percent from the field (19-53), while they limited the Bison to 32.3 percent shooting from the floor (20-62). Holy Cross canned 6-of-17 from downtown (35.3%), while Bucknell only hit 3-of-18 from behind the arc (16.7%).
  • Holy Cross shot a perfect 9-of-9 from the charity stripe, while Bucknell hit 9-of-14 from the free-throw line (64.3%).
  • The Crusaders held the statistical edge in assists (15-13), blocked shots (7-6) and bench points (18-6), while Bucknell led in rebounding (46-30) and points in the paint (32-22).
