Women's Basketball Topped By Colgate, 76-71

THE BASICS:

  • Score: Colgate 76, Holy Cross 71 
  • Records: Colgate (2-12, 1-2 PL); Holy Cross (5-11, 1-2 PL) 
  • Location: Worcester, Mass. (Hart Center) 
  • The Lead: Colgate's Randyll Butler totaled a team-high 16 points to go along with six rebounds and five steals, to help lead the visiting Raiders to a 76-71 victory over Holy Cross in Patriot League women's basketball action on Wednesday evening at the Hart Center. The win gave Colgate its first victory over Holy Cross in the Hart Center and snapped a 27-game losing streak in Worcester.

TURNING POINT:

  • Holy Cross trailed Colgate 24-23 at the 7:08-mark of the first half after senior forward Emily Parker (Johnston, Iowa) connected on a jumper. Colgate, however, erupted on a 14-4 surge to gain the 11-point, 38-27 lead with 1:49 left in the first half. The Crusaders would trail by no less than three points for the remainder of the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Colgate jumped out with the early 10-3 advantage just over two minutes into the first half (17:58), as it connected on four of its first five shots in the game. Holy Cross countered with an 8-4 rally to make it a three-point game (14-11), as junior guard Kate Gillespie (Washington, D.C.) canned a pair of three-pointers during the run.
  • Holy Cross cut it to 16-15 at the 11:54-mark of the first half, before the Raiders answered with an 8-2 rally to go ahead 24-17 (9:08). The Crusaders responded with six straight points to make the score 24-23 (7:08), but Colgate went on a 14-4 surge to gain the 38-27 lead with 1:49 left in the stanza. The Raiders went into the locker room with the 40-31 advantage.
  • In the second half, Colgate pushed the lead to 10 points on three occasions, as the Raiders held the 53-43 lead with 13:33 on the clock. Holy Cross, however, rallied back and went on an 8-2 run to make the score 55-51 (9:51).
  • The Raiders countered and went up by nine points (61-52) with nine minutes left in the second half, before the Crusaders whittled the margin down to three points (62-59) at the 6:30-mark of the period. Colgate pushed forward and went on an 11-5 spurt to go back up by nine points (73-64) with two minutes on the clock.
  • Holy Cross tried to mount a comeback, as it worked the deficit to 74-71 on the back of a junior guard Lisa Mifsud (Erie, Pa.) layup (0:49), but the Raiders hit two free throws to make the score its final, 76-71.

INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Mifsud led Holy Cross with a game-high 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting with a three treys to go along with six assists. Gillespie added 16 points on a 6-of-9 clip from the floor and a 3-of-4 mark from downtown.
  • Junior forward Raquel Scott (Ridgewood, N.J.) just missed a double-double with nine points and a game-high 13 rebounds, while junior center Molly Hourigan (Memphis, N.Y.) posted nine points, eight rebounds and game-best five blocks.
  • In addition to Butler for Colgate, Missy Repoli (15), Paige Kriftcher (12) and Josie Stockill (10) all recorded double-digit points. Carole Harris posted eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

TEAM STATISTICS:

  • Both teams shot well from the floor, as Holy Cross edged Colgate with a 46.3 percent clip from the field (25-54), compared to a 45.8 percentage for the Raiders (27-59).
  • The Raiders canned a season-best 50.0 percent from behind the arc (7-14), while the Crusaders connected on 7-of-15 from downtown (46.7%).
  • Colgate drilled 71.4 percent of its free throws (15-21), while Holy Cross only hit 14-of-24 from the charity stripe (58.3%).
  • The Raiders held the statistical edge in rebounds (39-30), assists (17-16), second-chance points (16-7) and fast-break points (11-4), while Holy Cross led in points in the paint (34-26) and blocked shots (6-1).
  • Colgate scored 26 points off 22 Crusader turnovers, as the Crusaders tallied 25 points off 25 Raider miscues.  

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • The win for Colgate was its fifth all-time versus Holy Cross and its first in the Hart Center. The Crusaders hold the 49-5 overall series lead. The victory also snapped a six-game losing streak for Colgate against Holy Cross.
  • Scott now has 600 career rebounds in three seasons at Holy Cross. She is 114 caroms shy of the 10th spot on the Holy Cross all-time career rebounds list.
  • Hourigan moves into a tie for fourth place on the Holy Cross career blocked shots list, as she now has 144 collegiate blocks.
  • Mifsud crossed the 600-point milestone in the contest and now has 604 career points scored.
