Women's Basketball Falls To Loyola Maryland, 57-51

THE BASICS:

  • The Lead: Loyola Maryland's Colleen Marshall scored a game-high 21 points on 8-of-17 shooting to help lead the visiting Greyhounds to a 57-51 victory over Holy Cross in Patriot League women's basketball action on Thursday evening at the Hart Center.

TURNING POINT:

  • Loyola held the 38-37 lead at the 6:30-mark of the second half and would embark on a 10-2 run to gain the 48-39 advantage with 4:16 left in regulation. The nine-point lead, the largest of the game by either team, would be enough for the Greyhounds, as Holy Cross did not get any closer than five points for the remainder of the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Holy Cross grabbed the 12-6 lead at the 10:58-mark of the first half, but an 8-2 rally by Loyola tied the game at 14-14 (3:54). The Crusaders outscored the Greyhounds, 7-6, to conclude the half and went into the locker room with the 21-20 lead.
  • In the second half, Holy Cross kept the one-point lead (26-25) with 16:10 on the clock, but an 11-5 rally by Loyola put it ahead 36-30 (11:22). Two free throws by both freshmen guard Katie Doherty (Holbrook, N.Y.) and junior center Molly Hourigan (Memphis, N.Y.) tied the game at 36-36 (7:55).
  • Over the next 3:39, the Greyhounds went on a 12-3 surge to gain its largest lead of the game, 48-39, with 4:16 on the clock. Holy Cross worked the deficit to five points on three occasions over the final minutes of the game, but would not get any closer as Loyola held on for the 57-51 victory.

INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Doherty led Holy Cross with team-highs of 13 points and four assists, as junior guard Lisa Mifsud (Erie, Pa.) totaled 11 points and three helpers.
  • Junior forward Raquel Scott (Ridgewood, N.J.) posted seven points and nine rebounds, while senior forward Emily Parker (Johnston, Iowa) tallied six points and five boards. Parker scored her 800th point during the contest and now has 802 points as a Crusader.  
  • In addition to Marshall for Loyola, Bri Betz-White totaled 13 points and a game-high six assists, while Jeneh Perry hauled in a game-best 15 rebounds.

TEAM STATISTICS:

  • Holy Cross struggled from the floor, as it shot 30.2 percent from the field (19-63). Loyola shot well on the night, as it connected on 21-of-50 (42.0%), including 46.2 percent of its shots in the second half (12-26).
  • The Crusaders only hit 15.8 percent from downtown (3-of-19), while the Greyhounds canned 7-of-18 from behind the arc (38.9%).
  • Holy Cross held the statistical edge in rebounding (40-39), points in the paint (26-17) and second-chance points (16-9), while Loyola led in assists (16-12), steal (8-7) and points off turnovers (15-7).
