Women's Basketball Tops Navy, 60-44

THE BASICS:

  • Score: Holy Cross 60, Navy 44

  • The Lead: Holy Cross junior forward Raquel Scott (Ridgewood, N.J.) posted 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists to help lead the Crusaders to a 60-44 triumph over Navy in Patriot League women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Hall.

TURNING POINT:

  • With Navy on top 19-17 at the 7:50-mark of the first half, the Crusaders embarked on a 19-4 surge to gain the 36-23 lead with 35 seconds left in the stanza. The Midshipmen would not get any closer than nine points for the remainder of the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Navy jumped out with the early 10-6 lead at the 14:51-mark of the first half on a three-pointer by Chloe Stapleton. The Crusaders, however, countered with an 11-4 rally to gain the 17-14 lead on a 15-foot jumper by Scott.
  • The Mids scored five quick points to take the 19-17 advantage and advanced the lead to 21-20 with 7:02 left in the first half.
  • Holy Cross erupted on a 16-4 surge over the final seven-plus minutes, to head into the locker room with the 36-25 advantage. Freshman guard Katie Doherty (Holbrook, N.Y.) scored five points during the run to lead Holy Cross, while junior guard Lisa Mifsud (Erie, Pa.) tallied four points.
  • The two teams went back and forth over the first 10:53 of the second half, as the Crusaders held the 11-point, 46-35 lead (9:07). Holy Cross went on a 9-2 run to gain its largest lead of the game (55-37) at the 5:12-mark of the period.
  • The Mids would not get any closer than 15 points over the final 5:12, as the Crusaders earned the 60-44 victory.

INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS:

  • In addition to Scott for Holy Cross, Mifsud totaled 13 points, four assists and three rebounds, while senior forward Emily Parker (Johnston, Iowa) posted eight points and five boards.
  • Doherty tallied seven points, while junior center Molly Hourigan (Memphis, N.Y.) recorded team-highs of eight rebounds and three blocked shots.
  • Navy was led by Stapleton, who scored a team-best 15 points.

TEAM STATISTICS:

  • Holy Cross shot 38.6 from the field (22-57), while it limited Navy to 30.4 percent shooting from the floor (17-56).
  • The Crusaders canned 5-of-16 from downtown (31.3%), while the Mids only hit on 4-of-23 from behind the arc (17.4%).
  • Holy Cross drained 11-of-13 from the free-throw line (84.6%), while Navy connected on 6-of-9 from the charity stripe (66.7%).
  • The Crusaders held the statistical edge in total rebounds (44-34), assists (16-12), points in the paint (24-20), points off turnovers (14-7) and second-chance points (11-4).

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Holy Cross is now 40-19 all-time in games against Navy and 19-9 in contests played in Annapolis. The Crusaders are on a two-game series-winning streak against the Mids.
  • Hourigan scored her 400th collegiate point in the contest and now has 402 in her career.
