Women's Basketball Earns 64-46 Victory Over Lafayette

THE BASICS:

  • Score: Holy Cross 64, Lafayette 46 
  • Records: Holy Cross (7-13, 3-4 PL); Lafayette (10-8, 3-4 PL) 
  • Location: Easton, Pa. (Kirby Sports Center)
  • The Lead: Holy Cross freshman guard Katie Doherty (Holbrook, N.Y.) scored a game- and career-high 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting to go along with a trio of three-pointers to help lead the Crusaders to a 64-46 triumph over Lafayette in Patriot League women's basketball action on Wednesday morning. The win for Holy Cross was the 700th in the history of the program, as the team is 700-426 all-time in 41 seasons. 

TURNING POINT:

  • Lafayette held the 17-15 lead at the 4:44-mark of the first half, before the Crusaders closed out the period on an 11-3 rally (26-20). The Crusaders doubled up Lafayette, 10-5, to start the second half to give them the 11-point lead (36-25). The Leopards would not get any closer than eight points for the remainder of the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Lafayette grabbed the early 8-2 lead at the 16:16-mark of the first half, but the Crusaders rallied back and knotted the score at 8-8 (12:20) on a junior guard Lisa Mifsud (Erie, Pa.) jump shot.
  • The score went back-and-forth over the next 7:42, as the Crusaders took the 18-17 advantage on a freshman guard Infiniti Thomas-Waheed (Newton, Mass.) three-pointer. A pair of free throws by Thomas-Waheed and a trey by Doherty at the 3:15-mark gave the Crusaders the 23-17 lead, as part of an 8-0 surge by Holy Cross.
  • Lafayette knocked down a three-pointer with 1:12 on the clock, but Thomas-Waheed scored her 10th point of the half on a trey at 0:53 to give Holy Cross the 26-20 lead at intermission.
  • Holy Cross increased its margin to 36-25 at the 16:33-mark of the second half. From the Thomas-Waheed three-pointer in the first half to the 11-point second half lead, Holy Cross embarked on a 21-8 rally.
  • The Crusaders increased the lead to 21 points (51-30) midway through the second half (9:08) and kept the 21-point lead (55-34) at the 5:52 mark of the half.
  • The Leopards cut the margin to 57-42 with 3:54 left in the period, but that would be as close as they would get, as the Crusaders went on to claim the 64-46 victory.

INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS:

  • In addition to Doherty for Holy Cross, junior forward Raquel Scott (Ridgewood, N.J.) recorded her ninth double-double of the season and the 28th of her career with 13 points and 11 rebounds, to go along with a game-high six assists.
  • Mifsud tallied 13 points and four assists, while Thomas-Waheed scored 10 points in the contest. Junior center Molly Hourigan (Memphis, N.Y.) recorded five points, seven rebounds and a team-high four blocked shots.
  • Lafayette was led by Emily Homan, who registered a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Anna Ptasinski (13) and Maddie Peabody (10) also recorded double-digit points for the Leopards.

TEAM STATISTICS:

  • Holy Cross shot well in the contest, as it connected on 23-of-59 from the floor (39.0%), including a 44.8 percent clip in the second half (13-29). The Crusaders limited Lafayette to 26.7 percent shooting from the field (16-60).
  • From behind the arc, Holy Cross canned 6-of-16 (37.5%), while Lafayette hit on 7-of-30 (23.3%).
  • The Crusaders drilled 12-of-16 from the charity stripe (75.0%).
  • Holy Cross held the statistical edge in total rebounds (49-38), assists (17-10), points in the paint (32-16) and second chance points (10-4).

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • The win for Holy Cross was the 700th in program history, as it is 700-426 all-time in 41 years.
  • The contest was also the 900th game coached for Holy Cross head coach Bill Gibbons, as he is 560-340 in 30 seasons at the helm.
  • Thomas-Waheed scored her 100th career point and now has 101 points in her freshman campaign.
  • Holy Cross is now 52-8 all-time against Lafayette and 22-5 in games against the Leopards in Easton. The Crusaders have now won 10 straight games against Lafayette.
