Women's Basketball Defeated By American, 74-63

THE BASICS:

  • Score: American 74; Holy Cross 63 
  • Records: American (7-6, 2-0 PL); Holy Cross (5-10; 1-1 PL)

  • The Lead: American senior guard Jen Dumiak recorded a double-double with game-highs of 21 points and 11 assists to help lead the visiting Eagles to a 74-63 victory over Holy Cross in Patriot League women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at the Hart Center.

TURNING POINT:

  • Holy Cross held the eight-point lead (51-43) with 9:12 left in the second half, but American went on a 10-2 run to tie the game at 53-53 (6:33). Including the aforementioned run, the Eagles outscored the Crusaders 29-12 over the final 8:59 to earn the triumph.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Crusaders jumped out with the 13-4 lead just over seven minutes into the contest (13:57). Junior forward Raquel Scott (Ridgewood, N.J.) scored six points for Holy Cross during the run. American, however, countered with a 9-4 rally to cut the deficit to 17-13 (9:17).
  • Holy Cross pushed the lead to eight points (23-15) at the 7:12-mark of the first half on the back of a junior guard Kate Gillespie (Washington, D.C.) three-pointer. The Eagles responded with a 7-2 spurt to make it a three-point game (25-22) with 3:05 left in the first period.
  • The Crusaders would outscore American 6-0 to end the half, including a three-pointer by junior guard Lisa Mifsud (Erie, Pa.) with four seconds on the clock to give Holy Cross the 31-22 lead at intermission.
  • American opened the second half on a 10-2 surge to cut the margin to 33-32 (16:45), but a 6-2 run by the Crusaders with a pair of three-pointers by Mifsud and Gillespie gave them the 39-34 lead (15:11).
  • The Eagles, however, charged back and knotted the game at 53-53 at the 6:33-mark of the second half. The two teams went back and forth over the next 2:20, but Dumiak canned a three-pointer to give the Eagles the 62-59 lead with 3:52 on the clock. Including Dumiak's three-pointer, the Eagles closed the game on a 15-4 run to earn the 74-63 win. American iced the game going 8-of-8 from the charity stripe over the final three minutes.

INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Holy Cross was led by Scott, who recorded 18 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Mifsud also scored 18 points, including a 4-of-7 clip from behind the arc to go along with four boards and a pair of assists.
  • Crusader senior forward Emily Parker (Johnston, Iowa) totaled 10 points, eight caroms and a pair of blocked shots, while Gillespie posted 11 points, four rebounds and a team-high five assists.
  • In addition to Dumiak for American, Michelle Holmes (20), Arron Zimmerman (10) and Shaquilla Curtis (10) all scored double-digit points.

TEAM STATISTICS:

  • American shot 47.3 percent from the floor (26-55), including a blistering 64.3 percent in the second half (18-28). Holy Cross also shot well for the contest, as it connected on 27-of-59 from the field (45.8%).
  • The Crusaders canned 6-of-18 from downtown (33.3%), while the Eagles drained 50.0 percent from behind the arc (5-10).
  • American sank 17-of-20 from the free-throw line (85.0%0), while Holy Cross was limited to 42.9 percent shooting from the charity stripe (3-7).
  • Holy Cross held the advantages in rebounds (32-30), assists (19-18) and blocked shots (5-1), while American led in points off turnovers (12-9) and fast-break points (10-4).  

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • American is now 15-17 in the all-time series versus Holy Cross and is 6-10 in games played at the Hart Center.
  • The Eagles now have a two-game winning streak against the Crusaders.
