THE BASICS
Score
: Amherst 3, Holy Cross 1
Records: Amherst (7-1-1); Holy Cross (7-3-1)
Location: Hart Center (Worcester, Mass.)
Time: 2:05 p.m.
The Lead:  Amherst's Tori Salmon, Madeline Tank and Alex Toupal each scored for the Jeffs as Holy Cross fell 3-1 to Amherst on Saturday afternoon in non-conference women's ice hockey action at the Hart Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Neither Amherst or Holy Cross were able to find the back of the net in the first period as the Crusaders had eight shots on goal while the Jeffs had five.
  • Two minutes into the second period, Salmon's shot hit the post and found Emma Griese in front of the net. Griese rebounded the shot to Salmon who whipped it past the reach of senior goalie Alexandra Stevenson (Norwood, N.Y.) and landed in the top right-hand corner of the net as Amherst took the 1-0 lead (1:52).
  • Both teams put the pressure on one another for the remainder of the period as the period ended with Amherst on top. The Jeffs outshot the Crusaders 15-5.
  • The lone power-play opportunity of the game came 11 minutes into the third period as Amherst sent Camille Herzog to the box for hooking. Holy Cross was able to kill the penalty a minute into it on a goal by freshman Kara Violette (Biddeford, Maine).
  • Senior Mary Klimasewiski (Conchester, Conn.) rebounded a shot made by Violette and passed it off to junior Mackenzie Boardman (Anchorage, Alaska). Through a sea of Jeff's defenders, Boardman found Violette open and launched the puck past the reach of Amherst goalie Yuna Evans, landing in the right-hand corner of the net and tied the game at 1-1 (12:05).
  • With a little momentum after Violette's goal, Holy Cross outshot Amherst 12-5 in the third, but Amherst regained strength and was quickly able to get the puck between the pipes two times.
  • Two minutes remained in the third period as Alex Toupal tallied her third goal of the season as she drove the puck up the ice and quickly put a wrist shot behind Stevenson, putting Amherst up 2-1 (18:05).
  • A breakdown in the neutral zone allowed Amherst to gain control of the puck with seven seconds remaining in the period as Toupal quickly passed the puck to Madeline Tank as the Jeffs sealed the 3-1 victory on an empty net goal.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
