Women's Basketball Falls Late To Lehigh, 66-60

THE BASICS:

  • Score: Lehigh 66, Holy Cross 60 
  • Records: Lehigh (12-4, 4-2 PL); Holy Cross (6-13, 2-4 PL) 
  • Location: Worcester, Mass. (Hart Recreation Center)  
  • The Lead: Lehigh senior forward Katie O'Reilly tallied a game-high 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting to go along with eight rebounds to help lead the visiting Mountain Hawks to a come-from-behind 66-60 victory over Holy Cross in Patriot League women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at the Hart Center.

TURNING POINT:

  • Holy Cross held the 45-36 lead with 15:44 left in the second half, before the Mountain Hawks slowly chipped into the margin and went on a 23-13 run to gain the 59-58 advantage with 2:43 on the clock. Lehigh went 7-of-10 from the charity stripe over the final two-plus minutes to ice the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Lehigh jumped out with the 13-6 lead at the 14:21-mark of the first half on an O'Reilly jumper. The Mountain Hawks kept the seven-point lead (22-15) with 8:48 left in the period, before the Crusaders went on an 8-1 run to tie the game at 23-23 (7:06).
  • The Mountain Hawks went up by four points (27-23) with 5:07 left in the first half, but the Crusaders responded and took the 29-28 lead (2:31) on a pair of free throws by senior forward Emily Parker (Johnston, Iowa).
  • The game was all square at 31-31 with 51 ticks on the clock, but two free throws by junior center Molly Hourigan (Memphis, N.Y.) and a three-pointer at the buzzer by junior guard Kate Gillespie (Washington, D.C.) gave the Crusaders the 36-31 halftime lead.
  • Holy Cross used a 9-5 spurt to gain its largest lead of the game (45-38) at the 15:27-mark of the second half. The Mountain Hawks, however, slowly rallied back and outscored the Crusaders 23-13 over the next 13:02 to gain the 59-58 edge with 2:43 on the clock.
  • The Crusaders offense failed to produce over the final 2:43, as they connected on 1-of-7 to close out the game. Lehigh went 7-of-10 from the free-throw line as part of a 7-2 run to earn the 66-60 victory.

INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Parker led Holy Cross in scoring with a season-high 13 points and chipped in with three rebounds. Junior forward Raquel Scott (Ridgewood, N.J.) scored nine second-half points and hauled in a game-high 13 rebounds.
  • Junior guard Lisa Mifsud (Erie, Pa.) totaled nine points and six assists, while Hourigan posted eight points, eight rebounds and a game-high four blocked shots. Freshman guard Katie Doherty (Holbrook, N.Y.) recorded eight points, six rebounds and a personal-best four steals.
  • In addition to O'Reilly for Lehigh, sophomore forward Lexi Martins registered a double-double with 13 points and a team-high 12 rebounds.

TEAM STATISTICS:

  • Both teams struggled to shoot the ball, as Lehigh connected on 33.9 percent of its shots from the floor (20-59), and Holy Cross drained 32.2 percent from the field (19-59).
  • The Crusaders canned 3-of-12 from behind the arc (25.0%), while the Mountain Hawks only hit 3-of-18 from downtown (16.7%).
  • Holy Cross shot a 79.2 percent clip from the free-throw line (19-24), as Lehigh hit on 23-of-39 from the charity stripe (59.0%).
  • The Crusaders held the statistical edge in assists (14-8), blocked shots (5-0) and points in the paint (30-22), while the Mountain Hawks led in total rebounds (47-38) and second-chance points (13-8).

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Scott scored her 900th collegiate point in the contest and now has 908 in her career.
  • Tricia Byrne earned her first career start.
  • Holy Cross is now 40-18 in games played against Lehigh and 20-10 in games versus the Mountain Hawks at the Hart Center.
