Women's Basketball Falls To Army, 67-53

THE BASICS:

  • Score: Army 67, Holy Cross 53 
  • Records: Army (10-5, 2-3 PL); Holy Cross (6-12, 2-3 PL)

  • The Lead: Holy Cross junior guard Lisa Mifsud (Erie, Pa.) totaled 12 points, four assists and a career-best five steals, but the Crusaders were defeated by Army, 67-53, in Patriot League women's basketball action on Wednesday evening at Christl Arena.

TURNING POINT:

  • Army used a 16-4 run midway through the first half to gain the 14-point, 33-19 lead with 5:38 on the clock. The deficit would be too much for the Crusaders to overcome, as they did not get any closer than seven points for the remainder of the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Army jumped out with the 15-9 lead at the 13:18-mark of the first half, before junior forward Raquel Scott (Ridgewood, N.J.) canned a three-pointer to make the score 15-12 (12:49).
  • The Crusaders made it a two-point game (17-15) with 11:07 on the clock, but back-to-back three-pointers by Army's Jean Parker gave the Black Knights the 23-15 lead (10:07). Army used a 10-4 spurt to gain the 33-19 lead (5:38) on a Kelsey Minato three-pointer. The Black Knights would go on to keep the 14-point lead (39-25) at intermission.
  • Army doubled up Holy Cross 8-4 to begin the second half and take its largest lead of the game, 48-29, at the 16:35-mark of the stanza.
  • Holy Cross, however, responded with a 14-2 surge to cut the deficit to 50-43 with 11:10 on the clock. The Crusaders forced four Army turnovers during the stretch. The Black Knights ended the Holy Cross run and put up five quick points to gain the 55-43 advantage (7:02).
  • The Crusaders cut the margin to nine points on three occasions over the next five minutes and worked the deficit to 61-53 with 1:16 on the clock. Army, however, ended the game with six straight points to make the score its final, 67-53.

INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS:

  • In addition to Mifsud for Holy Cross, Scott totaled 12 first-half points for Holy Cross and three rebounds. Senior forward Emily Parker (Johnston, Iowa) posted nine points and a team-best eight rebounds, while junior center Molly Hourigan (Memphis, N.Y.) tallied eight points and six boards.
  • Mifsud recorded her 200th career assist, while freshman guard Katie Doherty (Holbrook, N.Y.) scored her 100th collegiate point during the contest.
  • Army was led by Minato, who scored 17 points, while Parker and Olivia Schretzman recorded 15 points apiece.

TEAM STATISTICS:

  • Army shot 54.2 percent from the field (26-48), including a blistering 63.0 percent in the first half (17-27). The Black Knights also connected on 6-of-12 from behind the arc (50.0%).
  • Holy Cross drained 17-of-54 from the floor (31.5%) and hit on 5-of-15 from downtown (33.3%). The Crusaders canned 14-of-15 from the free-throw line (93.3%).
  • Holy Cross held the statistical edge in rebounds (34-30) and steals (12-5), while the Black Knights led in assists (16-12) and blocked shots (5-3).
