THE BASICS:

  • The Lead: Holy Cross junior defender Haley Makuch (Granby, Conn.) tallied her first goal of the season, but the Crusaders were defeated by Cornell, 2-1, in non-conference field hockey action on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Cornell scored the first goal of the game in the 34th minute (33:43), as Gabby DePetro put back a rebound, which gave the Big Red the 1-0 lead.
  • The Big Red increased its margin to 2-0 just over two minutes into the second half (37:20). Krysten Mayers dribbled into the circle and lofted a shot over Crusader sophomore goalkeeper Maya Langman (Crozet, Va.) to give Cornell the two-goal lead.
  • At the 63:06 mark of the contest, Makuch made the score 2-1 with a goal off a penalty corner with assists by juniors Colby Lohrey (West Simsbury, Conn.) and Kaitlyn Murray (Farmington, Conn.).
  • Crusader sophomore Audra Kinney (Louisville, Ky.) had a chance to tie the game in the 68th minute with a shot on goal, but Cornell goalkeeper Kelly Johnson made the stop.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Johnson made five saves for the Big Red, while Langman made six stops for the Crusaders.
  • The Big Red held advantages in shots (15-7), shots on goal (9-6) and penalty corners (6-4).
  • Holy Cross sophomore Lauren Sutherland (Watertown, Mass.) led the team with three shots on goal, while Kinney had two shots on net.  

UP NEXT:

  • The Crusaders return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 24, when they host Siena at 6:05 p.m. on the Hart Turf Field.
