Field Hockey Drops Contest To Georgetown, 2-1, In Overtime

THE BASICS:

  • Score: Georgetown 2; Holy Cross 1 (OT)
  • Records: Georgetown (2-2); Holy Cross (2-4)
  • Location: Worcester, Mass. (Hart Turf Field)
  • The Lead: Georgetown sophomore forward Aliyah Graves-Brown tallied the game-winning goal seven minutes into overtime to help lead the Hoyas to a 2-1 triumph over Holy Cross in non-conference field hockey action on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Crusaders had a chance to score in the 17th minute, when freshman forward Maureen Connolly (New Canaan, Conn.) sent a cross into the circle to classmate Rachel Lapar (Wolfeboro, N.H.) who launched a shot on net, but Georgetown goalkeeper Rachel Skonecki made the save.
  • The Hoyas recorded the first goal of the game in the 22nd minute (21:36). Louise Chakejian passed the ball from the left side to Sarah Butterfield in the middle of the circle, who found the back of the cage to give Georgetown the 1-0 lead.
  • In the 33rd minute, Connolly had a scoring chance with a breakaway down the right side of the field, but Skonecki pushed aside the opportunity.
  • Holy Cross almost tied the game in the 41st minute, as junior forward Katy Cronin (Franklin, Mass.) deked the goaltender on a drive up the middle. She ripped a shot from the left side, but Hoya defender Devin Holmes made the defensive save.
  • The Crusaders would knot the game at 1-1 in the 57th minute (56:03). Holy Cross junior midfielder Michelle McNeil (Canton, Mass.) sent a pass from the middle of the circle to the left side, where Cronin redirected the one-timer into the cage to tie the score.
  • Graves-Brown scored the game-winning goal in the 78th minute of the contest (77:44). With one defender to beat, she drove down the middle of the field and into the circle where she was able to slip the shot past Crusader senior goalkeeper Kat Matchett (Maple Glen, Pa.) to clinch the victory for Georgetown.
