Women's Basketball Outlasts Boston College, 80-64

THE BASICS:

  • The Lead: Holy Cross junior forward Raquel Scott (Ridgewood, N.J.) and junior guard Lisa Mifsud (Erie, Pa.) scored 26 and 23 points, respectively, to help lead the Crusaders to an 80-64 victory over Boston College in non-conference women's basketball action on Wednesday evening at the Hart Center. Holy Cross snapped a 16-game losing streak versus the Eagles, as its last win over Boston College came on Dec. 9, 1997.

TURNING POINT:

  • With the Crusaders on top 7-4 at the 16:49-mark of the first half, they would embark on a 26-4 surge to gain the 33-8 lead with 9:59 left in the stanza. Holy Cross drained five three-pointers during the run, including three in a row. Mifsud had 13 points to lead the Crusaders during the rally.  

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Holy Cross kept its 25-point advantage (43-18) with 5:45 left in the first half, before Boston College slowly chipped into the margin. The Eagles closed out the half on an 18-7 run, but the Crusaders went into the locker room with the 51-36 lead.
  • In the second half, Holy Cross used a 9-3 spurt to gain the 60-39 lead (16:08), as Scott tallied seven of the nine points for the Crusaders. The Eagles scored seven straight points to make the score 60-46 (11:54), but Holy Cross countered with a 7-3 run to go up by 18 points (67-49) at the 6:36-mark of the second half.
  • Over the final six minutes of the contest, the two teams went back and forth, as Boston College never got closer than 12 points on two occasions. The Crusaders finished the final two minutes of the contest with an 8-for-8 clip from the free-throw line to earn the 80-64 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Scott recorded her fourth double-double of the season and the 23rd of her career with game-highs of 26 points and 10 rebounds. It was her fourth 20-point game of the year and the 12th of her career. Scott also registered her 750th collegiate point in the contest and has now compiled 760 career points.   
  • Mifsud tied a career-best with 23 points to go along with five rebounds and four assists. She also scored her 500th point during the game and now has 503 points in her career.  
  • Senior forward Emily Parker (Johnston, Iowa) finished one point shy of a double-double with nine points and 10 boards, while she tied a career-high with four blocked shots. She now has 100 blocks in her career, which ranks fifth all-time in Holy Cross history.
  • Junior guard Kate Gillespie (Washington, D.C.) and freshman guard Katie Doherty (Holbrook, N.Y.) scored eight and seven points, respectively, while both had four assists apiece.
  • Boston College was led by Nicole Boudreau, who connected on 9-of-14 from the field and 6-of-8 from behind the arc for a team-high 24 points.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Holy Cross shot a blistering 56.7 percent from the field in the first half (17-30), but was limited in the second half to 25.0 percent shooting (6-24). For the game, the Crusaders shot 42.6 percent from the floor (23-54). Boston College was limited to 32.8 percent shooting (21-64). 
  • Both teams shot well from behind the arc, as Holy Cross canned 9-of-21 from downtown (42.9%), while the Eagles connected on 8-of-18 from long range (44.4%).
  • Holy Cross was able to clinch the victory with its excellent free throw shooting. The Crusaders hit on 25-of-31 from the charity stripe (80.6%).
  • Although Boston College held the 42-41 edge in total rebounds, Holy Cross held advantages in assists (19-16), steals (10-4) and blocked shots (6-4).
  • The Crusaders scored 23 points off 15 Boston College turnovers, while the Eagles scored 13 points off 12 Holy Cross miscues.
  • Holy Cross held the lead for the entire contest.
